Not meant to disparage Kalil but the way I read this he is getting the the same money, just getting more now and allowing us to spread it out by converting to signing Bonus, not necessarily some great noble gesture

Duh. This is how almost all restructures end up working. However, fans like to say it is some great gesture for their love of the teamm. Any Panther player would have taken this restructure. Unfortunately, it is not easy to do this with most contracts which is why not everyone can.

are his numbers right? which one is it 2.2mil of 3.45mil? someone please clarify this

I just asked him on twitter and he said he talked to

Yasinskas

and said they are both right. Point is that the panthers are about 10 million over the cap after the restructure. Think they were both looking at the amount over and did the math themselves on how much it saved.

Here was his exact response:

" josephperson: i talked to pat. we're both right when it comes to bottom line: Panthers are about $10M over the projected $131M cap."

If Person's numbers are correct, cutting Gamble would now get the Panthers under the cap (though not by much)

Making monetary sense of Panthers' moves

Looks pretty good.

Still a lot of space needed. still close to 7 million over cap and we also need a extra 12 million for free agency, rookie signings and some space during the season for injuries. Johnson needs to restructure.

Depending on what happens, I think we could be around 5 mill under in the near future

Not quite. Although Gamble has a cap hit of 10.9 mil, we'd only save about 9 mil by cutting him I believe. I could be wrong, but I believe he still gets his signing bonus as it is fully guaranteed.

We're nearly there though!

I took a peek at Johnson's contract and it may be the ugliest of them all.
http://www.spotrac.c...harles-johnson/

He has 32 mil guaranteed. His signing bonus and other bonuses equal 6.25 mil a year in 2013, 2014 and 2015. What's worse, his salary goes from 6.75, 8.75 and 9.75 respectively, whcih equals a 13, 15 and 16 mil cap hit. We can't threaten to cut him or else we take a 19 million cap hit. We obviously can't trade him (even though we need him, at least having these over his head is leverage) In fact, he wanted to leave to ATL, but the only reason he stayed was because of this fat paycheck.

In other words he's got us by the balls and will have no incentive to take a lesser cut.
