Am I reading this right? He cut his base salary by FOUR million and we give him a FIVE million signing bonus instead? If so, that's a terrible move. A base salary to signing bonus restructure designed to push cat hits into the future is beneficial to the player in EVERY way. There's absolutely no downside from their point of view. You shouldn't ever have to increase what they're being payed for them to accept that type of restructure.

I'm hoping this isn't being reported accurately. Base salary to signing bonus restructures are very simple and common in the NFL. It's probably the easiest and most straight forward type of restructure you can do. I sure as hell hope Gettleman can do those without getting hustled, he hasn't even gotten to the hard part of the job yet.

also in order to do a "signing bonus" restructure........ JR must pay the $5 mil. immediately.

this little nugget (lack of cash onhand) prevents some teams from pulling this maneuver.

I also believe what fools some people is when the term "cap savings" is used.

the player might be helping the team with their cap number.....................

but he ain't giving up "cash" to do it. He just gets his money faster.

This is just amazing.

Depending on if that option bonus is included or not (I cannot find any source for it) this is the deal:

-Mr. Kalil, we want you to sign here. It means you are payed the same money. Only a part of it up front instead of later
(and if the option bonus is not included)
-Here is another, up front, $1M just because we like you

Gettleman looks up. Noticed the contract is already signed and Kalil is running full speed down the hall.
-Well, guess I donĀ“t have to tell him if he is hurt or cut he can keep the up front money.

And the best part. 99% of the Panther fan are calling him a hero. A team first guy and generally thinks this proves he is an even better human being.
