On Thursday, Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman offered hope that Jonathan Stewart and Williams could remain on the team together.

"Can we keep both of them? Again, decisions have to be made," Gettleman told reporters. "I don't see why not."

What Gettleman knows is that the right restructure can keep him this year and we can talk about cutting him next year when a big chunk of the dead cap space will fall in 2015 when supposedly the TV contract will make the cap go up significantly.

Would you happen to know by how much? What is the margin of the supposed increase?

Recap:
We got to get to match 12th. There are lots of moving pots. What we did at the end of the season was similar to a new yak.

DeAngelo is here to stay. Gettleman just said as much anyways.

Future looks bright, and as much as I want to scream SuperBowl from the rooftops, that's how I got got last year.

I'm cautiously optimistic going into this year. Underneath I'm more optimistic, but on the surface I'm like "show me"

I guess it's a perspective thing. I saw it more as, Williams can stay if he restructures the way they want him to do so. Otherwise they'll do what they have to do to get the cap under this year and beyond. Meaning that Williams stay isn't as concrete as some may think. That's what I gathered from this conference anyway.

I agree, but if you remember I've been saying that DeAngelo was going to restructure since he signed that Monster deal anyways. Now we know that we can expect to hear something for sure in the next 3 weeks. It won't be long that everybody will be complaining that we still have them both, and then a short time afterwards there will be threads Thanking God that we do.

I like how he talked about a long term plan for getting out from under the cap problems. Shows that he knows what he's talking about, and that Hurney didn't.

yeah, hurney's philosophy was "let's just see what we can do today and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow." it was all about immediate needs or taking care of the past...nothing preparing for the future, which is why he traded away future picks and structured contracts the way he did. his focus was always on yesterday and today.

now gettleman is stuck trying to fix crap left by a guy with no vision for the future.

one thing that absolutely horrifies me is what would hurney have done to fix this mess? the only thing i can think of is what i saw from him in the past....mortgaging our future so that we can keep old players we feel an obligation to under this philosophy that "you don't let talent walk".

looking at the longview is good...but i think that among other things, he's having to keep in mind we've got a star franchise QB whose going to be getting paid boocoos and boocoos of money, esp. if we become serious contenders. he's got to be preparing the long term cap for that and i think he is, but that's one of the things we're going to have to be expecting when stuff really starts happening with the cap and personnel changes come along.

i'm not buying enthusiasm that williams and stewart will be around long term. only way that happens is if one or both make serious changes in their contracts and since stewart just had his renegotiated, i can't see him doing it again for a couple years. we just can't afford to have all that money tied up there, esp. long term. same with LB because luke is going to be getting paid a ton of cash the year after cam does.

it will be interesting to see how all this shakes out. i just can't imagine it will happen painlessly, but i have confidence it will.

Given they told everyone that 2014 would be the start of the higher cap and then said they borrowed money against the cap to increase it in 2011, I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with some reason to keep it flat in 2015 given the owners don't want a higher cap. But the numbers I have seen thrown around increased the cap anywhere from 20 to 30 million a year.
The reason our cap situation is worse in 2014 versus 2013 is Hurney negotiated contracts in 2011 expecting the cap to go up in 2014 instead of stay flat.

I just caught two clips on ESPN (yes i was watching it shame on me) that had Gettleman and Rivera talking about Te'o. They both said they didn't have a problem, especially Gettleman. He said he only cared about what he does between "the white lines." I found that pretty interesting. Maybe we will start drafting some players with more "character concerns."

If Double Trouble likes what Shula has planned...both will be here. Sounds like Gettleman likes DWill. Bet he does a restructure.
