I think DB becomes second most important after Oline. DT is next unless Edwards comes back, if he does then it's WR.

Steve Smith's replacements < Chris Gamble's replacements

That is why I put WR ahead of CB. But I do feel that OL and DT are the most important right now, but I like how Gettleman says drafting for need gets you in trouble. The thing is we have a whole lot of needs, especially future needs that will develop once we cut guys to get under the cap. But protecting Cam, beefing up the DL and getting Cam some weapons are the most important right now.

Do you feel LaFell, Gettis, Murphy, Pilares and Adams is a quality WR line up gong into next year?

I dont, but I think at least Thomas, Dockery and Norman can be serviceable at worse going into next year while we address DT, OL and WR with our 1st 3 picks this year.

I feel way more comfortable with the WR corp then the CB corp.

Agreed... People will always bring up the Chiefs game but they don't realize that that's the game after Big Ron went on IR so our DLine wasn't as strong (and Fua was the fuggin starting NT) and we started Nakamura throughout 7 games as soon as Martin/Campbell the safety play was better

CB isn't the top need (1. NT, 2.RG)

The WR played better as the Play calling got better and the Oline jelled. But nobody talks about that.

if gamble is cut, we won't be releasing capt.

we won't be without the both of them without someone else with experience brought in.

We won't be releasing Captain because he is a UFA. You can't release a player not under contract.

We have to sign him for him to be on this team this season.

Umm.. I didn't mention it because we're talking about defense here. But I do think we need a RG (we'll be better once Kalil returns). As for the WR I think it's because we started utilizing more of the WR's that were on the bench

Im sorry but all the rookie DB's that we were playing the latter half of the season played well enough for me to let them play one more year. They werent seattle, but they held their own for what was expected of them last april [which was essentially nothing]. Again, i would love for us to go after Miliner if we could or the honeybadger in the 4th, but i wouldnt be so concerned if we didnt. What would help the secondary without having to draft an actual DB would be good interior pass rushers.

I agree the only Secondary I want in the draft is a safety. We need to get a vet FA DB. I was just saying this is a bigger problem then WR. Special if we lose Gamble and Capt.

Here we go again, another "bash a great player" thread because we have to part ways with him.

Gamble is a very good cover 2 corner who often freelanced his way to interceptions but was never that great in man coverage. We appear to be going to more of a man coverage scheme with press coverage on the edges. That does not appear to be Gamble's best skill set anymore. Moving on might makes good money sense but also might better fit what we are doing going forward.

Anyone have info which breaks down how he did in zone versus man situations.

I don't understand this mentality. Yeah, the rules on pass interference are stacked in the offense's favor, but an elite CB like Darell Revis or Richard Sherman can shut down #1 receivers.

But we can not afford elite talent at any position. To me our weakest position is safety with martin gone or with Martin staying. An elite cb is 10 million a year

Its been said that D Milner is not elite talent coupled with not performing in the combine.Being the best of class and elite are differant

We could use one in the draft but I don't think it's necessarily a must 1st or 2nd round pick.

That guy out of Illinois (Hawthorne?) could be an option

I'd like the get a FA upgrade anywhere in the secondary as well. Campbell and Josh Thomas are the two I'm ok with now and like so yes, I'd like to see some improvements. Rome wasn't built in a day so there will likely be some thin positions come the new season.

He was a difference maker when he was healthy.

But yeah, over the past few years, we've kind of had to learn to live without him.

It won't be quite as big a transition as it might have been a few years ago.

see, I keep hearing that fallacy. Before last year, he'd missed a total of six games in four years. Let's not pretend he's Dan Morgan.

While I'm at it for the rest of the thread, Munnerlyn isn't going to be cut, he's a free agent. I really do hope he stays, but there's not a lot of money to go around. After a terrible 2011 (you know, another one of those seasons that Gamble excelled that people write off), Munnerlyn bounced back and really played pretty well, but he's still a nickel guy.

The end result is, renegotiating a 29 year old starter and adding a year or two means a mil or two savings less than the $7.9 mil he'd save, but then your dead money is going toward a player, not an empty slot, and his future years won't cost as much because his proration is done from 2009 this year. So, you could have, essentially, a CB like Gamble for $2 mil, or have the full savings and try to find a starter for $2 mil. I would prefer the player we have personally. But I'm sure there are tons of starters at CB that can cover elite WR at pennies on the dollar, right?

And to think not too long ago the consensus here was that Gamble got robbed by not being chosen for the Pro Bowl.
