I hope they don't cut tuition assistance and you take some classes on morality. And people wonder why this country is cutting back on things like tuition assistance for military.

How did they come up with the dollar amount? If you go to prison for the wrong reason the least they could do was pay the person at least whatever salary they lost plus bonuses and cost of living increase. That's the bare min tho.
I do think "punitive damages" get out of control in this country sometimes, but this is such a horrible story that I don't have much problem with the figure.
For the kind of ridiculous incompetence that spawned this story, those responsible probably ought to be locked up and left alone for two years themselves.

You kidding pstall?
Future damages + healthcare costs + lost assets + pain and suffering + punitive damages.
If this were a lawsuit (assuming the jail can't claim imminent domain) then first of all my lawyer is arguing that he has lost any ability to work for the rest of his life. He will also need expensive mental and possibly physical healthcare for the rest of his life. He may have lost a house or something because he couldn't make mortgage payments. And a dog and a car and his comic book collection. He suffered unimaginable torture for 2 years which are damages. And his 8th amendment rights were broken.
Easy settlement.
