Hardy and Lafell

The Panthers should be more concerned about finding a #1 WR than worrying about LaFell. #89 will be 34 this year, and he is still the best WR the Panthers have.

Now, LaFell is another story altogether. I am just miffed as to why people continue to speak as if he is all that and a bag of chips. He isn't steak, people, he is more akin to Spam. He barely plays to the level of a B-list WR in this league, and he is going to have to up his game markedly for him to even be a major concern when his contract comes up. I think he will be a concern---someone who knows our system, that would be nice to have, but up to now his play doesn't warrant a big money deal because he hasn't played near what people first believed to be his potential. I could argue that he has been a little disappointing, actually.

it's the carolina way- make completely average and replaceable players franchise cornerstones.

Gettleman has been clearing up cap space for next year and future years so I bet we get them back. We need to be able to resign Hardy.

If all this inactivity is just so we can sign Hardy next year i dont have a problem with it. Keeping building through the draft till we get our core guys takin care of.

as much as this team needs playmakers, and fans outcry for such, I couldn't imagine letting this guy (over all others) walk because of "cap issues"..

Alexander hasn't shown to be 1/4 of what Hardy is right now. No way can we just let Hardy walk because we picked up Frank.

Hardy will be given this season to prove that he can continue to play at last year's level. If he does that, then I am sure we will do what we can to keep him. However, if we cannot come to an agreement prior to FA, then I have no doubt that we will place the franchise tag on GH.

And depending on how talks go, we may then look to pick up a DE early in the 2014 draft. If we do go that route, it would give the rookie a year to learn as he transitions to the NFL while Hardy plays on his franchise tag. Also, before someone throws out Alexander as a potential Hardy replacement, I do like him, but I see him as never being much more than a valued backup and rotational guy, not a consistent starter.

Our DEs are whats gonna make our defense respectable the next couple of years. Having Luke at LB is just icing on the cake. We could have a elite defense very quick. Gettleman just has to build around them smartly but not take too long, i will be astonished if he screws that up.

NY model is to keep drafting DEs....building through the draft doesn't mean paying your draft picks big deals once they mature/peak.

Exactly. Draft well, and you have depth. Quality depth diminishes the need for big contracts.

You are going to have to pay the ones that turn into starts. But if you do it right, you don't hancuff yourself. Sounds familiar. Also, if you draft well, you may be able to makes some trades. You can trade some talent for more picks to perpetuate the proccess.

Drafting well is still the benchmard. Teams that do so are markedly more consistent. The only worry I have with Gettlemen's approach is the fact that this is his first draft. Gonna be interesting to see how he plays it.

We have drafted some talented players. So we are doing fairly well in that area, lately. Paying that talent a fair deal is where we seem to be off course. Hopefully, Gettlemen rights the ship like most seem to think he can.

given a choice between the two...you do that.

lafell is basically moose-lite. if we draft WR well this year, we let lafell move on. don't need to be over-spending for a pretty average receiver.

we gain more by extending hardy.

that said...i don't see us keeping hardy either. he'll be commanding more money...not CJ money, but still more than we should be spending on one position. look at paul kruger's contract as a baseline.

My opinion is if hardy lights it up again this year I say we do what we can to pay him, people tend to forget he was considered a top 5 pick(possibly #1 overall) at one point. And I don't think we've seen the best of him yet, but we'll see..

i don't forget that, but i also don't let that keep me from protecting cap space. it would be tough, for sure, but we absolutely can't fall for the hurney "you don't let good players leave" trap. once you start down that road, you cripple the rest of the team.

you cannot put that much money into one position...esp. when you are always so close to the cap.
