Man Strength

Panthers among teams talking to Kevin Boothe - OG

I dont think we can find a quality replacement for Gross and protecting Cam is worth more than $11 million... If he wasn't a greedy asshole, he would restructure and we could get 4-5 million back this year.

Why don't you take a 50% salary decrease so your employer can afford to pay that young star in your department? Should be no problem for you, huh.

That is what you expect Griss to freely do.

Fans simply just do not understand that the NFL is a business for both the owners and the players.

Gettlemen is not showing me much in getting these deals done.I thought for sure we should have had DEdwards signed. These guys are not playing for food scraps

He was a scout, not a cap/contract negotiator in a previous life.

Uhh you dont understand the business... restructuring does not mean you take a pay cut..it means you earn less this year but will still be rewarded the same contract as before when all is said and done.

Except that it has been pretty well reported that the Panthers asked him to take a pay cut, not a simple restructure.

THe money is unguaranteed. He has to project what he could get as a settlement and then on the open market. If there is no difference, why should he

But Marino had no time in the Superbowl.......you ain't getting far without that o-line. LT is just important because those DE come flying 50 miles per hour and if you don't see them you fumble.(or get injured real bad)

Don't wanna see Cam constantly getting stripped like in the Vikings game with Jared Allen......if not for those strips Newton would have won that Vikings game.....dude was on fire that day. Don't forget the stupid ass kicker. lol smh.........................

Dan Connor signed with the Giants...the Giants - Panthers pipeline seems to be going in the wrong direction with the Giants loading up on ex-Panthers....

I know exactly how restructuring typically works. But, the articles about Gross have all mentioned taking a salary cut as well as a restructure.

So, a little google search would go a long way in not making you look clueless.

Given the cap hell we are in now, and which us apparently worse in the near future, restructuring aging players contract is only kicking the can down the road and making our future dimmer.

Gettlemanhad inherited a cap and contact mess right now. I understand this and also realize that this team may have to struggle in the upcoming season to begin to fix it.

We would get $6.7m in cap relief, but the cap hit is higher.

Here is what PFF says about his value--

https://www.profootb...ensive-tackles/

3. Jordan Gross, Carolina Panthers

2012 Cap Hit: $11.5m

2012 Performance Based Value: $6.1m

Value Differential: -$5.4m

Like Williams, Gross (+16.3) didn’t grade out poorly in 2012, finishing the regular season as our 20th-rated offensive tackle, but he just wasn’t worth the $11.5 million that Carolina paid him. His 94.7 PBE Rating was tied for 26th among players at his position and, while it would have been difficult for him to justify that cap hit regardless, that’s too much pressure to allow from a left tackle being paid that much.

Then there was this paragraph in a statement about Atlanta's Sam Baker:

https://www.profootb...-make-no-sense/

One of the great fabrications in the NFL is that you need a franchise left tackle. The book and movie The Blind Side made the position into something it wasn’t, a glamor spot on the roster, and contracts given out to these stud pass protectors began to perpetuate the myth. The only problem is that we’ve seen recently you don’t need a great left tackle to win if you have a great quarterback. We’ve also seen that the best left tackle in football won’t make a bit of difference to your fortunes on offense if you can’t find a legitimate quarterback.

So, if you look at things from PFF's point of view, we should probably consider letting Gross walk.

I disagree with this perspective, but am interested in what others think.

If we let Gross walk, that leaves a hole on Cam's blind side that we would have to full via free agency or the draft. Gettleman has said he wants to build through the draft, though he also said he wanted to do some things in free agency so that he can take BPA. Free agency isn't an option for LT so that leaves the draft. There is only one LT I want who could start immediately- Central Michigan's Eric Fisher.

He would have to fall to us though. He is projected to be top 10/15.

Other than picking him, I say that we keep Gross.

When we would cut Gross is also a factor. If we cut him before the draft that means everyone knows that we need a LT. BUT, if we don't, and Fisher is there at 14, I say we take him and then cut Gross.

Just a thought
