My case to why we should not take an OT at 14

90 posts in this topic

So just because it's not an immediate need (but will be within the next year or two) it's not worth addressing? I just don't buy that. Outside of Star or Milliner, Lane Johnson would be the BPA on our big board if he was there at 14. He's a legitimate top five to seven pick for a reason. I hope it would take a pretty big trade offer to move out of the spot if he was there. LT is a premium position, and the players are paid that way for a reason....

Why would you take a position now when it's not a need today? It certainly will probably be the biggest or 2nd biggest need going into next year draft, but it's not even a Top5 need today. Especially, when that position (OT) is a position that comes out every single year. Next year will be just as packed again with Matthews, Lewan, etc.

You don't build an elite team by drafting based on your needs. Your best talent comes from the draft so you want the best players at your pick. Obviously we're not going to look at a RB, LB or QB in the first because we have a surplus of good players, but every other position could (and should) be on the board...

If your whole reason to why we should take a Lane Johnson at 14 is to move Bell at RG and Gross to LT, please stop now. I think Rivera have made it clear that Bell will be a RT.

Like many other times, the only way I would not be oppose to take an OT in the 1st is if we parted ways with Gross. When OT actually becomes a NEED.

I think Gettleman has made it clear that he's not hitching his wagon too tightly to Ron Rivera, so I don't think his opinion matters much right now.

If Johnson was there, I'd take him and if he looked good in camp I'd send Gross packing. Sorry, it's just business and Gross is eating up a ton of our cap room.

That doesn't make sense what you just said.

If we were picking based on BPA, we could go with a Jarvis Jones or Ansah than Lane. DE and OLB is just a need an OT. What would happen to Hardy? What if TD and Beason doesn't come back healthy?

Trust me, we're picking BPA. But, BPA at our "needs".

And that is how you build a winning football team.....

I wouldn't have. In those days it was a run heavy league. RT was a need in 2003. OT isn't a huge need in 2013.

If we were redoing the 2003 Draft next month based on our needs today, at no.8 I would have to pass on Gross for Kevin Williams or Troy.

Really genius??

You forget we had Jenkins Buckner Moorehead and Burton (pig farmer) backing them up and you would have drafted a DT???

Yep your opinion should be taking seriously.

That, I can't disagree

I never said Ansah was off the board. In fact, I think Ansah could be extremely intriguing to Gettleman because he already saw a similar player in JPP turn into a monster. Also, in what world after the middle of January is Jarvis Jones rated above Lane Johnson on a big board? Trust me I LOVE Jarvis' game being that he started out a Trojan, but Johnson is the higher rated prospect.....

Thanks for calling me a genius. (name calling again; please seek a therapist)

Read again bud, I said if I had to redo the 2003 Draft for next month (using the 2003 players for the 2013 Draft) based on our "needs" right now, I'd take Kevin or Troy. Get it or you want me to dumb it down even more?
