It's funny how some people were worried about the cap because of the Gettleman hire. And he's proved to be a genius compared to Hurney (who was considered a cap guy).

Basically he saved us somewhere between 3-7 million in cap space. Likely closer to 3 I think.

He signed an extension that can be voided by the player next year, the deal had a 4.5 mill bonus.

We prorated that bonus over the 4 years like so

This year 3.5
2014 500k
2015 500k
2016 0

So his salary cap "hit" this year went from 10 million to 4.5.

Or something like that :D

Lets sign a couple veterans now, branch and an OG then BPA in the draft!!!!!

BPA or a swing for the fences type pick.

all this predraft work gettleman has been doing is opening up all kinds of doors.

Oh, screw it.

YES! Hooray for Saint Jordan Gross. He's the ultimte team player who not only deserveds a statue but will probably use what little money we forced him to take to feed starving children. (I heard he wanted to play for free but Jerry wouldn't allow it.)

To recap the Jordan Gross deal. He's working under what is basically a 1-yr, $5.5M deal. Saves money under cap, but will be FA next year.

This is probably Gross' last year in the league, hopefully we'll make it a good one.

If Yasinskas has it right, it's 6.8 million off this year's cap and 4.8 million off next year.

Almost 12 million saved in one fell swoop.

LOL. Gettleman is the master of the one year deal.

So which is it? A 3 year contract extension or a reworked 1 year deal? Because if it's just a one year deal it doesn't make sense that he would restructure or even help the team out at all. Then it doesn't make sense from the Panther side because it hurts them more next year then if he would've stayed on his original contract.

Where before cutting him next year would've saved the team around 8 million with a very small cap hit, now he doesn't really save the team anything at all next year and the team has a cap hit close to 6 million.

There are moves in the works then. Kinda interested in seeing where this goes.

I hate to say it, but Yas almost has to be right. Otherwise it's a questionable move for the Panthers.

Fans wonder why players hold out. NFL contracts offer little security unless money is guaranteed.

So many numbers being thrown around...I wonder if this causes any outstanding bonuses pre-extension to be amortized over the new contract length.

Yas seems to think otherwise, the 4.9 cap hit he listed comes from the now $1 million base + $1 million signing bonus from previous deal + $2 million option bonus from previous deal + $0.9 million amortized from signing bonus on new deal.

If my math is right...Gross' earnings this season drop from $8.7 million to $5.5 million, certainly commendable. All the while creating $6.8 million (11.7-4.9) in cap space this year.
