Disagree there, this team is in win now mode. JR made that clear with the Semin contract extension and the Staal trade. Thing just didn't go as planned this year.

Updated

1. Florida Panthers: 34 points, 2 games left
2. Colorado Avalanche: 37 points, 2 games left
3. Tampa Bay Lightning: 38 points, 3 games left
4. Nashville Predators: 41 points, 2 games left
5. Carolina Hurricanes: 41 points, 2 games left
6. Edmonton Oilers: 41 points, 3 games left
7. Calgary Flames: 42 points, 2 games left
8. Philadelphia Flyers: 45 points, 2 games left

It looks like the Canes will finish anywhere from second to eighth regarding lotto percentage.

If the lotto balls stay true, I've got us narrowed down to three prospects...

1. Aleksander Barkov: Center, 6'2, 209 lbs. Finland

2. Darnell Nurse: Defense, 6'4, 190 lbs. Canada

3. Rasmus Ristolainen: Defense, 6'4, 204 lbs. Finland

I think Barkov is overrated. Every video I have watched of him, you see what seems like very very little defense being played in Finland. Anyone can look like a stud when they can skate through the defense at ease. I like Nurse but not in the top 6 picks, I think he projects to peak as a top 4 defenseman, not a top line defenseman like you would want with that high of a pick.

Every major hockey scout says Barkov is the real deal. He tore it up for Finland in the world juniors. On top of that, he plays big with that 6'2, 209 lb. frame.

Also the Canes don't have to find a number one defender. If they can find a guy like Nurse to be an above average second liner, then you take him.

I would love Jones, Drouin, or MacKinnon; but realistically we are looking at Barkov or Nurse.

My point was that if you have a top 5 pick, you are looking for a guy who will be more than a solid player. Here's hoping a NC team doesnt get shafted in the lottery for once.

NHL.com came out with their final draft rankings and they have Darnell Nurse as the fourth rated North American player behind Jones, Drouin, and MacKinnon; and they have Barkov as the top European prospect. I would be happy with either of those two.

I just knew this was going to happen.

the team plummeted down the standings, got eliminated from the playoffs. The whole time that was happening, I just knew the team would manage to win like 5 games over the last 8 to take themselves out of the top 4 contention. :(
