Rivera wants to limit star to 30 snaps a game.

Keep in mind that, ideally speaking, an improved defense should be playing fewer snaps overall.

I thought of this initially to try to rationalize it but after doing research it didnt help.

The steelers D played 1016 snaps last year according to pff. Nfl.com has the steelers at 951, according to nfl.com that played the fewest d snaps in leauge. For comparison nfl.com had us at 1010

Don't forget that league rules today make it harder than ever for defenses to get off the field.

Still, here's hoping the number of snaps he ultimately plays is multiplied by more than 16 :)

I know as Panther fans, we've gotten used to regular seasons only, but I'm hoping that's about to change.

If that's what it takes to keep Star in the rotation 100% the entire game then I'm OK with it. We still have Dwan and Kawaan to man the other downs.

Let's not forget Hardy can play DT on passing downs. Honestly I don't think it will hinder us if Star is limited in snaps initially.

Dude is 320 lbs and played 92% of the snaps last year. He wasn't taking plays off. For comparison Floyd played around 60%-65%.

This is a good thing. We need to keep everyone fresh because we have a lot of talent on the D line now.

Suh played 1000 snaps his rookie year, Marcell Dareus played 750, and the best DT's in the game average 700+. According to pff.

Not saying I wanna kill him his first year but damn if he truly is a 3 down player, 30 is a little light.

I expect us to keep 4 maybe 5 DTs going into the season.

Dwan Edwards

Star Lotulelei

Kawaan Short

Frank Kearse or Colin Cole

This means were cutting Nate Chandler, Sione Fua

Casey Walker will probably make the practice squad.

So, I truly expect to see a healthy rotation out of these guys!  Man, we got a good group at DT now

Damn that's a lot of snaps for Dwan last season.

I would like to see Star out there more but if we have to do that to get Short some snaps, mind as well do it.

Chico might think that he wants Star out there for 30 snaps a game but when he proves that he's a STAR, we're looking at 40-50 snaps for him.

Star can have the same rookie impact on this team like Cam and Luke, they weren't getting any limited snaps, why should Star.

when he's worn out he's not as effective.

In the interview with Kirwin today RR said they belive in a rotation on the DL.

Which will help all of them...........especially our DB's.

PS.....I listened to the entire interview and did not hear anything about "30" snaps per game.

Those were regular season numbers.. Steelers were not in playoffs last year

For some reason I get the feeling if the op said 20-25 snaps a game the responses would be the same.

Perhaps a little light. But we also have a very deep rotation. I'm not saying I would want him to be on a definite snap count, but more the coaches being conscious about how much he plays. He obviously looked winded in some of his college games being out there that much. It will make our defense better overall to keep people fresh. Think about the 4th quarter defensive losses last year. I think some of that can be attributed to the d line being winded. Just food for though.

there are a couple reasons for the rotation according to RR.

One is so that Hardy doesn't have to move over to DT on passing downs.

Because Star is 320 pounds. He's a big guy. Big guy's need rest to make a consistent impact. Obviously this is two fold. If we need him in the game, he's gonna play. But keeping a rotation will be key to consistent pressure.

And Dwan is supposed to be any lighter?
