So much for all the knuckleheads complaining that they had no room for shelden richardson.

Coples moving outside in no way disproves that theory. Coples has proven himself as a defensive end in a 3-4, which is completely different than outside linebacker in the 3-4. If they have moved Coples to a position he's noticeably worse at just to fit in Richardson, then yes, they had no room. We don't know yet how he's going to fair speed rushing off the edge, rather than penetrating from the interior. We don't know yet how he's going to fair dropping back into coverage. He's going to have to lose weight. Just because they changed the position on the roster doesn't mean the Richardson pick is validated. Coples is going to have to play at the same level outside as he did inside for that to happen. Possible, but far from guaranteed.

Rex Ryan called out Coples last week during rookie training.  Said he needed to step it up.  Not very happy with Coples right now.

Here's more on him being called out by Ryan and why.

Last week, head coach Rex Ryan sent a message to linebacker Quinton Coples, calling out the second-year player for what he saw was a lack of effort in the weight room. The former first-round pick says that the message was received.

Neither player nor coach have talked about the perceived lack of effort with Coples saying it was a “first-time experience for me” and that he has never been called out before. He called it a “wake-up” call.

“I wouldn’t say I got comfortable, it was during a drill, it was videotaped and I could have given better effort,” Coples said. “The next day when we came back here, I gave a better effort to make sure it wouldn’t happen again.”

Coples said he heard about his head coach’s disapproval when his business manager called him about Ryan’s quotes from rookie minicamp. A Google Alert went off in his business manager’s inbox, notifying him of the situation.

“I wasn’t shocked by it; it was just something he did,” Coples sad. “I responded well. I responded in the weight room and got better.”

Last week, Ryan said he holds Coples to a very high standard since he “has all the physical tools to be the best player out on the field and that’s what we need him to be.

In 2012, Coples played in all 16 games and had 30 tackles. He led the Jets with 5.5 sacks.

unc fan here, and am well documented in vehemently opposing to us drafting coples last year. thank god we didn't, he is an extreme version of Peppers- in that he is very athletic but seemingly just doesn't really care that much.

thank god we were looking at Keek, and even Barron over this guy

hard to imagine that a player could be a (4-3)dt can also play olb.  i have heard the jets plan to show both 3-4 and 4-3 fronts, in that case it makes some sense.  the jets have lacked pass rushers for the past couple years now, i thought jones was a shoe-in for their second pick, but they never seem to amaze me.
