both of those are payments for work that was performed over many years.

I am talking more about the payments that start flowing when they turn 18 (or likely birth if you factor in the payments their parents received to raise them).....and don't stop until they die.

Ohhhhh. You mean the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

handouts aren't a handout if they go to a good cause, like blowing up brown people halfway around the world

Pretty sure they worked for theirs...elderly could be means-tested/debated.

Nobody should be allowed to retire with a full pension after 20 years. Nobody.

I did a bike trip a couple years back and ran into several vets that were in their 40's. Fully capable of working and being productive members of society, but instead they'll be collecting a military pension check for the next 35+ years. Paid to vacation and fug off. Pretty sweet life.

So is that the biggest problem we face in your eyes?

Ohhhhh. You mean the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

I did not support the tax cuts then.  And was/am for repealing them....only if that comes along with real and meaningful spending cuts.  The cuts are the part that never seem to happen with Democrats.

When the economy is strong.....the money is flowing and Dems see no reason to cut spending

When the economy is weak (now)....can't cut spending because too many people need it.

Bottom line is that the Democratic party has ZERO intention to ever reduce entitlement spending in this country.  In fact, they would like to take over an increasing number of areas and put them under government control......they are pushing towards socialism and everyone knows it.

The biggest problem in my eyes is the ricidulous level of spending (and continued increase in spending) by our government.....and that is across the board.

Neither side is willing to take hard looks at spending and to make real decreases.  Instead, they just want to raise taxes and keep on spending.

It is an unsustainable model and the debt is completely out of control.  We are truly running this country straight towards bankruptcy.  But, people are too uninformed or apathetic to really care....as long as they keep getting theirs.

Deep cuts across the board are needed....but no one is willing to fall on that sword.

I have never met a retired military person who is willing to live off of his or her military pension after 20 years.  Several people I work with now are retired military, and I think they get about 1/3 of their average pay over the last 5 years or something to that effect.   My cousin retired after 20, and he gets about $1200 a month after taxes.  Basically, its a house payment and a car payment.  Not enough to vacation on.  Unless they are disabled (in which case they get a higher percentage), all of them continue to work.

Now, if the military does have some options for contributing to a ira, and many take advantage of that.  The military doesn't match it, but they do allow the contributions. And some military members put a lot into them because on the various deployments, they don't need much of their active duty pay.  So if member is very frugal and invest wisely, he or she might be able to retire with the combination of the two.  But that is a very rare occurrence.  The vast majority keep working and contribute quite a bit to society.
