Police say they're handing out flyers for McMartin Tree Service and it's not insured.

"These kinds of companies change their name from even door to door," Tom Bartholomy, president of the Charlotte Better Business Bureau, said.

He and Adams said people need to check out businesses before they hire.

"If he shows up at your door, close the door -- and call the police," Adams said.

Police said it's not illegal for the men to go door to door, but they want to make sure residents are fully aware of who they might be hiring.

I read this without thinking much of it. But then I thought, are these guilty of anything or currently committing a crime?

One guy is alleged to have stolen money but no witnesses actually came to court. The other guy is a rapist. So they are certainly unsavory.

But is it the job of the police to interfere with a private business just because they aren't nice guys?

What am I missing?

Because of this perhaps

Police said in some cases, the men do complete the work, but in others they take the money and disappear

What is that based upon? Could be heresay for all we know.

Why didn't this guy who lost $1400 show up at court?

Is it the police's job to act on a business that has a disgruntled customer?

I think you misread it.  The uninsured scammer is the one that didn't show up in court.

"Adams went to court five times but says witnesses or McIntosh didn't show up and the case was dismissed."

Presented themselves as insured, but turns out they were not insured.  Failed to show for court?  Seems like they would at least get a fine for that.

If you don't show up to court you usually get a judgment against you. Not a dismissal.

The whole thing makes no sense.

I see nothing wrong with this.  I hate bullsh*t artist.  Basically the police want them out of Pineville and know they will just move on to another area and then it will be someone elses problem.

The other strange thing is Adams advises people to "call the police" if they see the men.

On what grounds?

Strange.

Sounds like a personal issue with someone high ranking.

you guys don't understand why the police are "interfering" with "mcmartin tree removal, burglary, and rape services" after they defrauded their customers and literally dropped a tree on someone's roof?

I do not. Mainly because it is not typically the job of the police to act as judge.

If these guys have committed a crime then arrest them. If they deserve a ticket or a warrant then issue it.

If the police are going to start dealing with every business that has disgruntled customers based on anecdotal evidence they will need more staff.

the linked article makes no mention of a warrant, or the lack thereof
