Kennedy was very young when he said those things.  Young people tend to have a lot of foolish beliefs, especially when they are heavily influenced by a Father that got fired from his post as Ambassador to the court of St James because of the things he said regarding Germany and England.   I imagine Kennedy revised his beliefs quite a bit, just like a lot of Americans did.

Don't see what this has to do with Obama's visit though.

Somewhat, but that was not the thread. Why don't you start one on Bush if you desire. Then we can all "snark" it up.

I think plenty of people respected Hitler before WWII. He did lot's of good things for Germany such as fixing the economy.

The whole genocide thing probably soured a few folks.

there were tens of thousands of pro-nazi americans in the 30s and 40s

if you're from a german family you probably have "nazi sympathizers" from the era somewhere in your family tree.  the german-american bund had 25,000 dues paying members

^This. The speed in which he turned Germany's economy around was damn near a miracle.

Why respond to a pointless smear thread with a pointless smear thread?

Fwiw, the German economy was already beginning to turn around when Hitler took over.  But he did institute a lot of public works projects, and dramatically increased the size of the military in German.  Of course, he also took a number of people out of the work force (Jews and others), and confiscated their property.  So this did increase employment numbers among those that were left.
