A high school valedictorian in South Carolina got a round of applause after he tore up his speech at the podium during his graduation ceremony and delivered the Lord’s Prayer -- an act of protest in light of his school district’s decision that bans prayer from graduation ceremonies, the Christian News Network reports.

Roy Costner IV surprised the crowd who attended Liberty High School graduation at Littlejohn Colliseum in Clemson, S.C., on Saturday. He spoke for a few minutes about his family and thanked them for his Christian upbringing. He then said, "I think most of you will understand when I say, 'Our Father, who art in heaven ..." as he began to recite the Lord’s Prayer, KSBW reports.

"You couldn't even hear him doing the prayer anymore, because everybody was clapping and cheering," Brian Hoover, a Liberty student who attended the ceremony, told the news outlet.

Costner’s actions follow a Pickens County school board decision where Jesus’ name will no longer be mentioned in student-led meetings. The decision was approved by a 3-2 vote in March and has faced criticism from the local community.

"I believe it speaks to our freedom to pray and to call on Jesus. And I think we have that right," Rev. Paul Turner of Mount Carmel Baptist Church said, according to Fox Carolina.

“I think it took a lot of courage to do that,” attendee Logan Gibson told the Christian News Network. “People were [supportive] that he stood up for what he believed in.”

Good for him..if he decides to lead a prayer one can choose not to join in.

I understand not having sanctioned prayer from school officials but as an individual who worked hard for his honor..have at it!

Exactly.

It's all cool as long as its someone else's beliefs that are being marginalized.

Let a Muslim get on stage and start preaching the Koran and watch the Christians howl.

Then you would see a real grass roots effort by Christians to separate Mosque and State.

Well of course there would be an outcry if an Islamic prayer was made but he knew his audience of South Kacky Baptists! No real revelation there.

I am not excusing what would be an outcry of another religion but it was not the case. No harm done.

I was just at my 5th graders graduation today(in SC) and zero muslems in her class...98% christian bible thumpers..but if a prayer started I can choose not to join in. No prayer happened so no problem there.

My wife was at a Tai Chi class last tear where a first time attendee stopped and walked out because she thought it was channeling the devil..reasonable strength in your faith apparently.

However Gallop polls show you are 37.9 % more likley to be possessed by the red goat demon lord if deep breathing.

Well first off it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to be valedictorian at a SC high school...

Secondly, if the Carolina's were a Highlights comic strip, it is pretty obvious that SC is the Goofus...

I guess having a microphone and a podium is an excuse for anyone to get on their soapbox...
