Why is it so hard to believe that this could be a man made epidemic?  Is the government that so many of you criticize and ridicule that far above reproach all of a sudden. You mean to tell me that the same government that starts civil wars in brown countries across the world that kill millions.  That would give its own people syphillis in order to conduct medical experiments.  That would allow a foreign military to sink a battle ship, or attack a military outpost in order to enter a war. Remember the Eugenics movement that influenced the Nazi's was an American Ideal of the 19th century by several affluent politicians and scientists.

Soooo maybe I am not a doctor or a scientist, but I am logical.  And the idea that a virus could be around for 50 years (30's to 80's) and not affect more than a few dozen people, all of a sudden in the span of months infect 10's of millions?  A virus that is not airborne and needs direct body fluid transfer in order to infect.  Not even touch, sweat, or saliva.   In fact, when compared to all other viruses AIDs is kinda hard to catch.

Also, how could at the same time an isolated population of gay males be infected by the same virus, 1000's of miles away.  So many infected at one time that it would be illogical (or a pretty big orgy) to suggest that they could all be infected by the same mystical person that might have somehow made an illfated trip to an isolated part of central Africa at just the right time when this virus was jumping through time and space to infect the masses.

It's not that it is "hard to believe," it is patently false to accuse governments of deliberately spreading HIV.  It is "man made" in that it is based on a whole set of societal conditions (perhaps including lack of sterile needle usage in the first half of the 20th century) and lifestyle choices.  When people refer to "the government," I think they often forget that that government is made up of individuals.  What you are suggesting is that a rather large effort was made by a large group of people in order to purposefully... do what, exactly?  Wipe out Africa?  Kill gay people?

I do not know what you are talking about in your second or third paragraphs.  There wasn't a single person that started it all, there were at least three jumps in Africa for HIV-1 and at least one more for HIV-2, and that's just strains that didn't die out, and likely multiple introductions into the US from Africa, reintroductions of different strains back to Africa, etc.  I also do not know why you think that HIV is "hard to catch"; transmission rate can be as high as 40% under certain circumstances.  AIDS has been killing people since the 60s, and we have no idea how many people in Central Africa may have died of AIDS before it became widely known.  That's not even counting the guy in the 60s that died in the midwest of HIV without ever going anywhere near a major American city.  The thing is, when a disease is unknown, a lot of cases go unreported.  This same argument is why some people claim Lyme disease was created by the government, too.

As to how epidemics can occur, it's because of exponential growth.  In 1983, there were ~250ish known cases... and 40 of those people had sex with a single person that later died of HIV.  Obviously, very few people are that sexually active, but it doesn't take much to reach millions when you've got numbers like that.

Now all that being said - while I don't think it is a massive conspiracy, governments around the world, and likely international health organizations, likely do share the blame in how SIV made it's jump... but there is zero proof that it was any kind of conspiracy.

I like people who think government isn't capable of doing the simplest of governance but more than capable of creating and maintaining complex conspiracies.

and btw if you want to talk about a government causing an AIDS epidemic let's talk about AIDS denialism in South Africa for a decade.

Well take something as simple as drone strikes, since I really know nothing about conspiracies that may or may not have been proven to be true.

They call it "collateral damage", right? Hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent people being killed in an attempt to maybe get a terrorist in the process? Technically, is that not genocide? Yet it's something our government just carries on with.

It's always easy to pick out who failed Statistics.

Dude I don't know the simplest thing about stats or why it relates to this thread. I've never taken a statistics class, so guilty as charged.
