plus in soccer, the players do the same thing... Many of them sit out because they dont want to get hurt but some want their team to win and the coach gets to evaluate more talent.

Im not saying it has to be par with the super bowl, but it would certainly draw more interest than a preseason game, and those still make the leage a profit so this would be a "watch if you enjoy football" games. not hey lets have a halftime show, funny commercials, sold out stadium, epic pregames and primetime coverage.

Drawback #1:  Potential Injury -  Could you imagine if we lost Cam to an ACL injury the entire next season in a meaningless third place game? Losing him as part of a meaningful drive for a championship is one thing.   Using the logic of " not if your comfortable playing the game ",  every team starters would play every minute of every game.  Risk vs Reward.

Drawback #2:  Fan interest -  Lets look at this year for example.  Would I really want to watch Atlanta vs Patriots game for the 28th pick?  I get as starved for football as the next guy, but unless the Panthers were one of those teams my interest would be slightly above cleaning my BBQ grill.

Drawback #3:  Corporate Interest -  The proud sponsor of the 2nd Best loser bowl is brought to you by McDonald?  The numbers(neilsen) on this game would be atrocious.  They wouldn't even play that horrible Drew Brees NyQuil commercial during this.

Drawback #4:  No Fantasy football implications -  There is a reason that the NFL, Yahoo, ESPN, Google, CBS, everyone and their mother pushes Fantasy Sports.  It generates hits, on websites, it gets people who don't follow certain teams to follow players who play on them.  Across the board, good mojo.  The third place game (2nd best loser bowl) would have no fantasy implications(because all of them are over with anyway).

NFL is always trying to generate more revenue, thus why the 18 game schedule thing keeps getting floated out there until it sticks.  However those games would be for playoff positioning(thus actually mean something).  Since no points carry over, and the only financial incentive would amount to a little more than a preseason game,  the pro bowl still seems like a more viable option.  IMO.

#4 is the only stretch. the rest are solid arguments against it.

this would get close to the same amount of ratings and interest as the probowl...which is negligible.

i had no interest in watching the probowl. i have less interest in watching a battle for 3rd place when all the players have to look forward to is a little extra cash. at least with the probowl you get a free trip to hawaii. players don't care about draft picks. there is very little reason for players to really care about that game.

some would watch it, but what would be the point?

if we want more good football, add another week or two to the regular season. don't add another ultimately pointless game or replace one pointless game with another.

the lombardi is all that matters. if you miss out on it priority #1 is getting ready for the next season. no team or player worth their salt cares about anything else. nobody cares who gets in 2nd. nobody cares about 3rd place. just first.

Ill just repost this since you dont care to read:

No one cares if "Rayzor" won't watch it. You probably know poo about football anyways or the business behind it. Its about the masses, and i'd bet you more people would watch it than any given preseason game or pro bowl.

I guess since smarter people than you aren't making it happen with the NFL, it's more likely that "Gucci Mane" is the one who "probably know poo about football anyways or the business behind it."

more viewers than any given preseason games? probably. more than the probowl? meh. the ones watching will be the ones who usually watch the probowl and the added audience will likely be fans of the two teams playing.

keep on hanging on to that dream, tho, "Gucci Mane".

Vince Lombardi detested the Playoff Bowl, coaching in the games following the 1963 and 1964 seasons, after winning NFL titles in 1961and 1962. To his players, he called it "the 'poo Bowl', ...a losers' bowl for losers." This lack of motivation may explain his Packers' rare postseason defeat in the 1964 game (January 1965) to the St. Louis Cardinals. After that loss, he fumed about "a hinky-dink football game, held in a hinky-dink town, played by hinky-dink players. That's all second place is – hinky dink."[1]

it's funny that lombardi got autocorrected calling it a sh1t bowl. i thought that poo was funny.

Using the Playoff Bowl (and loss) as motivation in 1965, the Packers won the first of three consecutive NFL championships from 1965-67.

Sounds like vince was just pissed that his team sucked that year ['64]... Thats why he didnt like the concept.

or it could be that he knew that the only thing that matters is first place. the only reason you play is because you want to get that championship. nothing is going to happen to make third place something worth playing for. there are no consolation prizes and we don't need to make any.

no one is arguing the first part.. i've said that repeatedly in this thread.

I'm just saying if its any more popular than a preseason game, then the league should do it. More football for those that want to watch. The stars can sit if they want. And a little more revenue for the league/ participating teams if they want.

It doesnt have to be this glorified event, just another game. thats it, thats all.

if there's no incentive for players/team to play, then there's no incentive for the game to exist at all.

no one wants to be third best.

yeah. thats probably it. i couldn't be just because its really not that good of an idea and whatever incentives you dreamed up for this didn't sound all that appealing and wouldn't be worth the effort in pursuing because the cost involved would outweigh any real benefits, esp. for a game that in the big scheme of things would just be a reprise of the original poo bowl.

Ok, lets put it this way...a 3rd place game in football makes no sense.  Maybe if it was...

A. A fans choice game.  1 game not involving Superbowl Particpants that was voted on by a poll.   I'm probably down for that.

B. Arch rival game.  Game involving arch rivals ie.. cowboy redskin, falcons panthers, etc etc.. I would watch. Especially if the losing team has to put the other teams logo on their field for the next home game.  Or maybe like college football some kind of made up trophy like a boot or something.

C. Maybe a match up between the last 2 teams out of the playoffs.... kind of a stretch ..however

I would rather see any of those before a 3rd place "MEANINGLESS" game.    Say I don't know about football, economics, the heart of players, etc ..etc..  IDC.  Would I want to see a game that has teams actually playing rather than going through the motions,  yes definitely.  However, no matter how you spin it, a 3rd place game means nothing in the NFL.
