Here you go, original Cambodian oil paintings by local Cambodian artists, average price $165 after capitalist markup, shipping, store overhead and profit built in. And if you knew anything about the art market, you would know Abstract with bright colors are the hottest thing and most of the art on this site caters to that. On the other hand, the ugly painting of a temple wouldn't appeal but to a very tiny sect of population and thus, to realize its value, you have to look at resale and I seriously doubt anyone pays more than $20, but maybe a national audience like ebay could fetch $100, deduct freight, ebay fees, paypal fees, he could be looking at a $25-$30 profit!

So while Phil would be lucky to clear $30 profit from his "smart buy", I'll keep my few thousands of appreciation based on current auction sales. Heck, I only need a 1% gain in value to better his "smart buy". Get the fug outta here!
