Why are we leaving the plan?

Sorry op but your comparisons don't really work here. The sonics had Ray Allen and were a team with the potential to relocated. (obviously they did) Sonics literally got Durant as soon as Allen left and hit the jackpot in every draft for the next 3 years. We were not so lucky. We get shafted every time. We missed on the number 1 pick now 2 seasons in a row. They panthers got lucky with Newton kind of like OKC did with Durant. Oden went first and people said Durant was too skinny and would get pushed around in the nba. The panthers tanked for Luck and the guy stayed in school. We took Newton when he was projected to go mid to late first round. The fact that about 10 teams are tanking this season makes our plan even less likely to work and it already hasn't played out in out favor.

Not to mention next year's FA class is LOADED and a lot of the mid-tier guys (like a Jefferson/JR Smith) could be cheaper next year with all the guys available.

I still think that even adding Jefferson/Smith (if we do), the Horncats still suck pretty bad next year.  I just don't want anywhere near the line where we could lose our 1st rounder next year.

I don't get the rush to get average next season.

Being Charlotte, we have to play the long game.  We have to get lucky. We have to be extremely smart and efficient with FA's.

We have 0% chance to win the title next season.

Most fans realize that the NBA's middle class is the worst place to be for a small market.

Wanna go all in? Fine, trade picks and assets to Demarcus Cousins.  At least he is young.

We are never going to be worth a damn or relavent until we have a bonifide superstar.

To SwagMan: Of course all those teams got lucky, thats what it is all about.  Spurs got "lucky" with Duncan, Cavs with Lebron, Durant with Thunder.

I just have a personal philosophy of going for the best.

Maybe thats why i got a much, much more better looking wife than a man of my means would normally get.  Patience.

Even with Cleveland though, The had the #1 pick and took Lebron. They lose Lebron and boom #1 pick again and they got Irving. And of course they once again got the #1 pick and took Bennett. Point is we have sucked for almost 10 years and have still yet to ever pick #1 overall.

Edit: Even if we tank this season we will end up getting screwed by New Orleans like we did in 2005 and last year. Same records in 2005 and worse record last year and each time they got the better pick, and as of right now the better players. Kind of a joke but you hopefully get my point.

Yeah they got Durant the first yr they were bad. Got lucky the Blazers took Oden over him.

Then they got Westbrook at pick 4 and Ibaka at 24.

So we have had a pick 2 (Durant) MKG pick 4 (Westbrook) Zeller Pick 7 Biz   pick 9 Kemba.... We have already tanked longer then they had to....

We need a dominant scorer down low, we have that opportunity to do so. Lets go get him! How many big men in the league can you say that can score down low as efficient as Jefferson? Not many

...and maybe, just MAYBE, the organization is happy with a core of Kemba, MKG, Biyombo, and Zeller and figure in 2 seasons, we will be better off signing Jefferson and maybe JR Smith, along with the possibility of 3 draft picks...rather than tanking and HOPING and PRAYING we land Wiggins or Parker and HOPING we get lucky like we have with Jefferson and have FA's interested in coming to Charlotte.

Kemba

Smith

MKG

Zeller

Jefferson

w/Biyombo, Taylor, draft pick, draft pick, draft pick, FA, FA (which we will have enough to sign a big time player and would be much more likely to do so)

or

Kemba

Wiggins

MKG

Zeller

Biyombo

w/Taylor, other draft picks, FA with ton of money to spend and not even knowing if this is guaranteed

Sure, id be cool with Wiggins, but if we pass up on Jefferson and Smith, and still dont get Wiggins or Parker(everybody else in that draft im not so sure can be a superstar - we'll see) then we wasted a great opportunity to become a serious contender.

No I definitely understand your point.

I am one of the ones who scream about the lotto being rigged every year.

But, I kind of feel like we are due.

If it is rigged, then maybe they could make a decision that NBA would benefit the most from having the 2014 Hornets to be the young, exciting team in the east.  Might be unlikely, but its a risk I am willing to take.

I was with you until serious contender. Maybe contending for playoff spot.

That team is still not better than the Heat, Bulls, Nets, Knicks, Pacers.

Of course, signing FA's this season could have always been the plan.

But, I can understand the urge to field a competitive team.  Maybe, I have just been so used to losing that I don't mind it anymore.

I just know the NBA is a superstar driven league, and it is something I want for the Hornets so badly.

Actually most fans don't realize the middle class is worst.  Most fans want a competitive team that is fun to watch and making the playoffs after being in the basement for a decade actually sounds pretty good.  The Hornets in the 90's built up a huge fan base because they had fun/competitive teams that could make the playoffs, and even though yeah they didn't go deep, they led the league in attendance for a while.

Which brings me to the next point.  Selling seats.  Do you think this team sales more seats with Jefferson this year or without?  This team MUST start making some money, soon.  I don't think we have the luxury of waiting another 5-10 years for a superstar.  Seattle wants a team, BAD, and when this one starts losing too much money for Jordan to care, it's gone.

You can't compare the NFL to NBA.  Tanking in the NFL guarantees first pick.  The NBA does not.  Early news this morning indicated 7 or more teams are tanking this year.  Considering we've had less competition usually for a good pick and still got screwed, do you like our odds against 7 other teams?  I sure don't.  Not to mention there won't be a big man as good as Al next year in FA class that would want to come here and I don't believe there will be on worthy of a lottery pick (at this moment) either.  We will still a center.

Then you get to the players we do have that we have invested in.  It's unfair for them to tank another year.  Kemba's third year, MKG's 2nd, etc.  We need these guys to improve and gel.  I don't think tanking would be good for us in the long run in keeping these guys and building a great atmosphere.  I just don't think we put together this potentially great coaching staff just to tell them to tank.
