Backpedal much? Hey it's what you typed. No point in arguing about semantics.

Anyway, we obviously aren't going to agree regardless. So it's all good.

Not backpedaling at all.

Correcting your mistaken interpretation.

I like the way some folks on here are quoting Matt's record but when it comes to Cam, oh wins are a team game. Truth is, Matt's a baller and Detroit can probably not find any better. As the saying goes, a bird in hand... (may poo in the palm)

None of those contracts are in the same year. Kraken is in 2014, Newton is 2015 or 2016 if we exercise the 5th year option and Kuechly is in 2016. Also remember that current negotiations are squeezed by a flat cap which is expected to go up substantially when the TV contract money is factored in in 2015.

By 2015 we will worked through the big dead money Hurney contracts to Beason, Williams and Stewart among others.Plus remember that even those huge contracts expected by newton, Kuechly, and Hardy will be cap friendly in year 1 and 2 making the big money due in year 3.

There is little to worry about for the next few years..

They may not all come due in the same year. But there will be one coming due every year. They will add up quickly. Just like Beast, Stew, CJ, DWill, and Gross all came due, we will have to perpetuate these deals. Kraken, then Cam, then Keek, then Star, then CJ again, then this guy, then that guy. There is always, hopefully, some guy, or guys, needing a deal done.

Which is why you have to draft well. You have to have replacements for guys who need those pesky big deals. Some of those deals you can live with, but now days you just cannot afford too many of those type deals. You are going to lose some guys. If you draft well, those losses don't hurt as much.

Talented guys on their rookie deals, with a few strategic FA, make it feasible to hand out a few big deals. But you can only have so many of those whoppers. Which is why I said we are in a more dire straights because we have more talented players than the Lions. Gettlemen is going to have his hands full.

When you are talking about this many deals. It won't make a difference if you front load them. They are still going to add up. They are still going to come due.

I love having all these talented players. Paying them all is the tough part.

I judge QBs by what I see. Stats and records can be deceiving.

What I see in Stafford is a guy whose ceiling is 'good' and who has the benefit of a superior receiver.

I don't think he'll ever be elite.

Btw, Stafford is 1-23 vs winning teams.

Then I don't think you have seen enough. Sorry to say that. But Mathew is everything you want your Franchise QB to be. He is the first to show up, and the last to leave. He has become a vocal leader, and he is the man in Detroit.

He has passed for almost 10,000 yards the last two seasons. Megatron only has 3800 of those yards. So evidently there are other guys doing good work as well.

I will admit that if the Lions had an actual running game those passing yards would diminish. But that does not take away from what he has accomplished the last few years.

He is absolutely a stud. He is one of the best young QBs out there. That screams elite to me. And I can live with that.

I have waited damm near a lifetime for the Lions to get a Franchise QB. And I am tickled pink to have Mathew.

Well we only have 3 wins against winning teams the last 2 years.

I think you are overblowing the situation by saying we are in dire straights.  We ended up starting off 2013 roughly 15 million over the cap and are now roughly 10 million under which was a 25 million swing and we lost who??  One very good player in Gamble.  That was it.  2014 will be a flat year when the cap is tough but even if we give Hardy a big contract, his cap hit in 2014 will be small and very manageable in 2015.  By the time it gets big in 2016, for example, Beason and Williams will be gone or restructured which makes up for what we pay Hardy.  The same with Newton.  Even if he averages 20 million a year, his cap hit in 2015 and 2016 will be manageable. Guess whose contract will end in 2017 when Newton's cap number gets big.  Yeah Johnson will be a free agent and he won't be making the 15 million cap hit he made in 2016. even if we resign him, his cap hit in 2017 will be cap friendly.  The same with Kuechly. By the time his cap number gets large in 2018, we wont be paying Stewart who will be a free agent agaiin.

As some big contract start piling up, other contracts are ending and we are replacing older players with newer ones in their prime. The draft not only helps you fill in positions with cheap guys on rookie deals but restocks the cabinet with premium guys to replace the aging veterans who price is outstripping their productivity. Even team that has significant talent goes through  the same process we will go through the next few years.  It is a never ending process of working the numbers to  make all the pieces fit.

The period between 2012 and 2014 is really unique in that we have a flat cap while top talent continues to make escalating money.  It squeezes older vets who were used to getting at least 2 or 3 big contracts and forced a number of good players to take smaller 1 year deals to continue to play in hopes of a bigger payday down the road.  Eventually the cap will go up as revenue increases and the pressure will ease somewhat.

If we can actually be come a playoff team that players want to play for, we might also get some hometown discounts by players who want to be here rather than having to overpay to keep guys playing here like we did in 2010.

I am hoping the future is so bright in a few years, I will have to break out my Panther shades.

Considering how many years and wasted first round draft picks, it's taken for Detroit to find a solid QB... I'm not shocked! :)

This team isn't going to let him walk and risk another Joey Harrington experiment.

The Lions have drafted 2 Heisman winners and 1 runner up. Yup, that worked out well for us. Although Long did throw a TD on his first pass. So that was cool. Been so long, and obviously so ingrained, I can't even remember the other two. Smith, I think, and...that kid out of Houston. Or was that Smith? And of course the Harrington years, which have already been chronicled.

Mitchell takes Miami to the Super Bowl. He can't make the playoffs for us. Garcia was another oohh yeah guy. Hellz, a litany of who's who of QBs have walked through our building. Well who's who may be stretching it a bit. More like who the fug is that?

The Lions take all sorts of MSU and UM QBs, but passed on Brady. And you Panther fans complain about a few bad years? Try damm near a whole life of bad years?

So yeah. Mathew is the Lions Cam.
