Richard Petty can still drive, Earnhardt can't. :roadrage:

besides, Childress owns the rights to the 3, if he wants his grandson driving it, he will. Nothing any ol windbag Earnhardt fan can say will change that. Dillon started driving the 3 in honor of Dale, but I guess Intimidator fans don't want homage to their fallen hero.

Earnhardt won rookie of the year & 7 championships vs Petty

Petty won 1 championship vs Earnhardt then took a backseat to #3

Jeff Gordon isn't even the best driver on his own team. Comparing him to Earnhardt is laughable

Not really.  He had more wins than Earnhardt, head-to-head...and more championships, head-to-head.  Take off the blinders.  To me?  Earnhardt is fighting for third best NASCAR driver of all time. :)

I always expected the 3 to come back to Nascar. It belongs to RCR, he can do with it as he pleases.

It's a number which belonged to the car owner, not the fugging driver.

Looks good.

My options are all greyed out so I cant link the page, but it was on Jayski, and the RCR team said they didnt release the photos.

According to team officials, the picture of the #3 car is a concept RCR was working through with Cheerios at the beginning of the season, and is not the car Dillon will run next season.

So it's a concept car, still.......looks good.

Well then, clearly you have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

They shouldn't retire the number, just the cars design. Honestly I don't care if I see the number 3 on the track again. I see a black car with a number 3 on the side and I expect to see Sr. hop out of the window.

And to say Sr. wasn't even popular until after he died is ridiculous. You either loved him or hated him. The sport took a massive hit when he passed. For many people it just wasn't the same anymore. I know it wasn't for me.

I do think a good homage to Sr. would be to run the black car at Daytona one more time and then change the color scheme permanently. No more 3 on a black background. I think that would be the greatest tribute to Dale that there could be and the number 3 could return to racing with no hard feelings between fans and RCR.

The black #3 is iconic and helped turn NASCAR into a mainstream entity. I know that NASCAR traditionally doesn't retire numbers but when a driver becomes synonymous with a number like Dale and 3 I'd support them retiring the #. I really have nothing against Austin Dillon but if he comes into the Sprint Cup series driving the 3 he's going to have astronomical expectations that he's never going to live up to. The 3 hasn't been in a cup series race since Dale died so if someone does ever drive it again they're going to be expected to be a very special driver.

Congrats to Austin Dillon on his Nationwide Series Championship!

Also, just wanted to throw this out there:

Dillon and the #3 to Cup?...announcement soon: The announcement is "pretty close," Austin Dillon said. Two years after winning a NASCAR Truck series title in a #3 Chevy fielded by his grandfather's NASCAR team, a Nationwide Series title he won on Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the same number for the same organization, the 23-year-old under the ever-present cowboy hat is expected to steward the iconic number back into the Sprint Cup Series for the first time in 13 years.(ESPN)(11-16-2013)
