Panthers Release Hangartner

Recommended Posts

you don't make a cut like this (a starter, even if he does suck) without having somebody who you are sure is going to sign. He can't think we can rely on Kug just yet.

I think Brandon Moore is in play right now.

Proof this is not a "Let's All be Friends Year."  Hangman was a great guy, but they were paying him to be a starter, and the judgement was made he wasn't up to snuff.

Gettleman did him a favor by cutting him now when he has a shot to make another roster.

But make no mistake, this is only the beginning.  Gettleman has made it clear the expectation is to win this year, and there will be consequences for those who can't make that happen.

It has been over 4 years since our last playoff game, and over 7 years since the last playoff win.  It's unacceptable.

Gettleman has referenced several times how well the players have been treated in this organization (and the insinuation is maybe too well).

JJR isn't getting any younger, and he knows what winning a Superbowl means to his legacy.  With the unfortunate passing of one of his sons, it does highlight the very real possibility ownership moves from the Richardson family when the team is sold when Jerry passes.

I believe the team will always be in Charlotte, but at this point in his life, I think winning a SB is the most important thing for JJR professionally, and Gettleman has been given the responsibility and authority to make it happen.

Oh man, everyone is exploding over this. If you go back and watch him get terrorized with 0 run push and 0 pass protection you'll love Gett's move

Getts watched our entire 2012 season and there was no way he didn't see Piggy's awful performance.. I'm glad he's gone.. he was a backup who ended up starting

He is a great backup tho, why release him? Getts can go out and get his 33 year old Wharton and 33 year old Brandon Moore all he wants.

Im not saying he should be a starter, he obviously knew he was already on thin ice after drafting Kugbila. Releasing him completely is what is questionable to me. We all know that depth at oline is our biggest weakness, thats all im saying... Being friends with our best leaders and team captains may sound arbitrary, but I've got to wonder if those guys are thinking the same thing that I am.

which is why it would be smart to see if that money needed cleared to sign someone like Moore..  if we cut Hangman and sign Wharton, I'm right there with you.  But nothing else in this post helps me think Hangman was worth keeping around if we can get a guy like Moore with that extra dough..

I get what you are saying but the timing is what bothers me about this...what does that do to the psyche of your offensive line (which has had struggles) when you take away a vet who has been running with the ones throughout camp?

I like the precedence that Gettleman is setting but I just wish he had done this before camp.  If Moore or Wharton is signed they won't even be able to practice (in pads) for two days.  This is just a recipe for early offensive line struggles in the first month of the preseason.

you man the fug up and play football..  nothing really irritates me more than worrying about a bad player helping the psyche of your team..

not a fan of cutting ties with one player without a replacement/upgrade in the wings. i hope there is one.

the timing of it is what i thing is the hard thing to come to grips with. it's kind of a shock. i think we all knew this was coming at some point, but now? why? of course you could also ask why not....

I don't think anyone is upset over Hangartner being gone...its more along the lines of who's his replacement.  Byers, Kugbila (on his bike)?

Gettlemen said there was a plan and maybe there is but right now it isn't clear to the fans...and it doesn't necessarily have to be but we have a right to be a little confused.

Even if we do sign Moore or Wharton in my opinion hangartner could have still provided a solid backup.

going ahead and replying to this since it's the next logical response to my post just above...

that's a decision a real GM had to make with 100% of the info instead of our mere speculation..  I'm sure he feels there are capable backups.  Moore being 4th best guard in the league isn't that baffling of a decision if they needed a little extra room to make this happen..

I highly doubt that our offensive line will spend the season sobbing over the release of Hangartner.

Shocking yes because I don't think people thought it would come. Timing: meh. What's even more shocking is Dator blowing up about the what ifs. Piggy was TERRIBLE.

The MOST shocking thing is the reactions by everyone.. how could anyone be comfortable with Piggy starting? The outcome is favorable because a bottom 5 RG release just saved us $4M over 2 years.
