Mr. Scot

Anderson minus Chudzinski

47 posts in this topic

Derek Anderson's best success has come during times when he's worked under Rob Chudzinski as an OC.  Away from Chudzinski though, Anderson's been up and down.  This past offseason, there was plenty of speculation he'd follow Chudzinski to Cleveland.  Most were surprised - pleasantly so - when he re-signed here instead.

After watching him the other night and reading some of the camp stuff, I wonder if not having him here this season will affect him.

Anderson's only a backup, and Newton has generally been durable.  There were, however, a fair number of 'slow to get up' plays as the season ran on last year.

So how comfortable are you right now with Derek Anderson as the backup QB?

If you're not, what could you suggest as a realistically viable alternative?

Rumble'ns since Friday from fans about how DA should watch out for Pickles.

Yeah, Anderson didn't look great the other night, but with our defense and running game (Barner baby!) I still feel like we could be competitive with DA under center. Also, I don't think not having Chud here would hurt DA too much. If you look at the season when he had success in Cleveland, it was on the back of a strong running game and TE play, not read option stuff, so I'm sure he'd be fine under Shula's play calling.

I'll grant that Clausen looked decent - playing with, and against, scrubs - on Friday night.

Still can't say I'm especially comfortable with the notion of him as our primary backup.

I don't like any of our backup QBs. We could definately use an upgrade.

It was ONE preseason game. Jeez.

All reports out of camp have said that he has looked sharp. Some even saying he's looked even more accurate than Cam.

Not quite.  He's had his fair share of negative plays.

I will be looking forward to seeing him in the next preseason outing though.

(Game 3 will be mostly Newton, and Game 4 probably mostly Clausen)

    • You miss the point. Taylor was here before. We picked him because of what he could do for our wide receivers not because he had some great knowledge no other person had on the staff. Shula and Rivera and Gettleman studied multiple college systems for months before signing Taylor or drafting McCaffrey or Curtis and would have drafted the same whether Taylor was here or not. They liked the way Taylor developed McCaffrey which showed his talent but Stanford's offense wasn't Taylors idea or unique to him. Shula has a connection to Taylor as early as when Shula was at Alabama.  The debate was whether Taylor was chosen to replace Shula because Shula didn't know what to do to run a college offense and if he screwed up Taylor would replace him. And that Taylor was the reason and most influential in getting McCaffrey. I said it wasn't even close to the truth and this plan predated Taylor and was more thorough and we'll thought out. Everything since then just confirms I was right once again like usual.
    • Assholes should've never taken it away in the first place.  Me and a couple buddies had a hookup and were all hyped up and planned out going to it... then the NBA had to get all political and take it out on the city of Charlotte and the fans -- which made no fuging sense.  Seriously doubt we'll even get the chance to go again.
    • 6'6" 255.  He'll definitely have some good mentors with JP, CJ and the rest of the D-Line crew. 255 he'll need to put some weight on don't you think?
