Obviously, we all WANT to win it, but do you feel we NEED/HAVE to win it?

I do.

Considering our lack of success in season openers going all the way back through the Fox era, and now 3 years into Rivera's tenure, I feel we NEED to win the opener.  Otherwise, I feel that same letdown effect will set in and it's almost as though the players feel they're digging themselves out of a hole from the jump.

I'm almost of the mind to say this is such a pivotal season opener, considering everything, that if we don't win it, the season will likely be another sub-.500 year.  We need to get off on the right foot this season, and losing the season opener just brings players and fans alike back to the "here we go again" mindset that has plagued our team since 2009.

What do you think?

yes.

over the past several seasons, this team has proven it cannot bounce back from slow starts.

I think Seattle is good enough to represent the NFC in the super bowl this year.. if we beat them, I think we will have a great season.  I don't think the sky is falling if we lose to a great Seattle team.. I still think we'd have a shot at 10 wins.

Great points, but I think our team's lack of resiliency following season opening losses is irrespective of who they lost to.  That's what concerns me.

I might just go blow my brains out.

No the first game of the season is not a "must win".

It would be a great win. It is always important to win at home. It is nice to start the season off right.

But if we start 0-1 we aren't going to pack it in and start evaluating our younger guys.

I think some of you guys don't quite get what "must wins" are. They are the games that if you lose your season or postseason seeding is literally on the line.

That won't be game one. I hope we win it though. It would be a great win.

a win first week is pretty important, but more important is going into the bye week with a winning record. if they can't do that, i doubt they will all season.

I think if we win, it will produce a major boost of confidence and momentum to take into the other games. So yes, the win is sorely NEEDED, but not absolutely necessary. We can still turn it around.

We are 6 and 12 all-time in season openers.  Like coin flips, I want to win everything.

There is no such thing as a season opener being a must-win in any sport.

The Panthers are the worst team in the league on opening day.  I think our record on season openers is 6-12.

After seeing someone suggest a preseason game is a must win, I motion we strike that term from the forum's vocabulary...

I don't think the sky is falling if we lose to a great Seattle team...

the sky may not be falling, but a week one loss paints the same lame picture from past seasons and indicates little to no progress from an overall lukewarm team.

my fondest memory of 2008 was the win in week 1. when that game was over, you knew the season was going to be good.
