Let’s take a step back now. From 2005 to 2008, Smith played in 48 games (including playoffs) with Delhomme as quarterback, the equivalent of three full seasons. He caught 299 passes for 4,686 yards, averaged 101.3 yards per game from scrimmage, and scored 38 touchdowns. In other words, when not playing with quarterbacks so bad that they make Jake Delhomme look like Joe Montana, Smith was producing average numbers that would be career highs for just about every receiver not named Jerry Rice. And he did it on a run-first team.

Everyone here would love Smitty to be in the Hall of Fame. It's going to be hard as poo for him to get in, though.

nothing new, but cool article nonetheless. i'm really interested to see how working with proehl and playing out of the slot will help his numbers.

If Steve has a good year we need to start a statue petition.

My favorite all time Panther and I will die loving him. I almost cry reading this article. I don't know what I'd do once 89 is not on the field dress as a Carolina Panther. The game will be so different. I was a 13 years old kid watching 89 back in the good old days. I admire the man Steve Smith so much. Thank you so much for everything he gave to me and this franchise. I know the days are coming closer. I'm so afraid to imagine the future without this man. An All-Time Great, HOF or not. The kid from Califormia, the young player who was nothing but a returner, the guy who lighted up Ericsson/BOA Stadium, and the guy who grew into a man will always be a HOF in my eyes.

i can't imagine steve smith not being on the field.

no way he doesn't get a statue and his jersey retired. can you imagine some twirpy little rookie nerdbag bopping onto the field wearing 89? he'd get booed out of the solar system.

Smitty needs 3 more years of over 1000 yards and another 25-30 TDs to be in the hunt for the hall of fame.  There are a bunch of receivers with more yards and Tds than he has now who are still not in the hall.

I'd like to hear one reason Smitty shouldn't have a statue.

Greatest Panther of all time. I became a Panthers fan in 2002 because of him.

His days are indeed numbered, due to his age. Not many WRs in their mid thirties still making an impact in the league, and he's still our #1. It will be a sad day when he decides to hang 'em up.
