As to SHTF, I think the idea of it happening is scarier than what would happen during the actual event.

I hope so...although I can't help but look over at whats going on in Egypt right now and think about the potentialities of what we could face one day. I think the human psyche is extremely fragile, and if certain conveniences and routines were taken away people could turn into animals very quickly. I'd like to think however that I have more faith in the human population than that though.

I'm going to guess no. We are a really long way from revolution.

I think we can beat the poor down for at least another 50 years before the riots start to get in the way of MNF.

There are definitely numerous scenarios that could lead to the collapse of our society.

The USA might eventually have a Louie XVI moment, due to the unfettered greed of those in control, but for that to occur the little people will need to suffer a lot more than they are currently.  The minions will need to be pushed over the edge.  As long as there is junk food, a couch to place your keister on, and a ginormous flat screen to watch sporting events, it is unlikely to happen. "Bread and Circuses".

Environmentally, we continue to trash the planet in the name of blind avarice and ignorance while mindlessly multiplying like yeast in a warm jar of sugar water.  The most plausible environmental doomsday scenario facing mankind may be overfishing and acidification of the oceans by unprecedented burning of fossil fuels.

These human activities may cause a collapse of the ocean food chain before the end of the century, resulting in unprecedented levels of starvation around the globe.  An environmental disaster that would likely cause a period of instability and wars not seen in generations, if ever.

Overfished and under-protected: Oceans on the brink of catastrophic collapse

Dont know about my lifetime but its closer than people think.

I'm convinced that my grandchildren will live in a country that is substantially different from the one I did.  Even to the point that I believe there will be a splitting USA and two new countries formed.

I dont know about all of that...

But I do think that its clear to anyone who is looking that our increasing intolerance of each others political views and inability to reach compromise are steadily leading us to a point where our government can not function in a meaningful way.  The political brinksmanship and pandering to the extremes of any and all sides has rendered our leaders impotent to govern in anything remotely resembling a fair and just government.

It would take a lot more than anything we've experienced so far to convince the average American to put down their bag of cheese puffs, get off the couch, and risk their lives for either political party's core beliefs.

Yes, there is a lot of rhetoric being spewed by pundits on the airwaves, but the reality is there hasn't been much of a difference between the compassionate conservatives and socialist liberals ruling the land for the last several decades.  The one constant throughout that time has been the rich getting richer and just about everyone else's standard of living stagnating or getting worse.  Whatever the 1%ers can do to take the spotlight off that reality is a good thing.  If that means dividing the remaining 99% against themselves by using propaganda, superstitious beliefs and bigotry, so be it.

The civil war only took place because the South's landed gentry and rich Northern industrialists couldn't compromise on economic policy any longer.  The war was essentially a battle of the 1%ers.  The average Southerner had little to gain and much to lose from conflict.

Future secessions would only be possible if a significant number of moneyed elite in our society decide it was in their best interests (highly unlikely).  They would need to manipulate the general public into needlessly throwing away their relatively comfortable lives.  Our average citizen may not be that smart, but I doubt they are that stupid (again).

The poo has already started hitting the fan. If you pay attention, you will see that many people think it is ok to steal and lie.   Even to the point of viloently taking what ever they want from others. Say that has always been, but it is increasing at an alarmoin rate.  Arm yourselves.  It will not be long that home invasions are common in all neighbor hoods. I know at least I will be able to shoot back. Als me what I need with high capacity clips and rapid firing weapons. That is it.  Hell I dont care to kill a deer. I want them for protection, like the constitution meant it.   The rights arnt for hunting, they are for protection.

Never hurts to be prepared.

Hopefully your firearm is in a secure location, since statistics show they are much more likely to injure or kill a family member than an intruder.

Of course who knows, the apocalypse might just be around the corner and you'll get to reap the dividends of your investment.

To be honest, it might be because I'm a younger person living in the decline of America, but I've never actually thought if America could collapse in my lifetime, I always knew it would. I can't see America being a dominate country in 25 years even.
