You make an interesting point but I'm not sure how well Barner (or anyone his size) will hold up under all that punishment.

With Stewart in limbo I'd like to see Tolbert be used more in the running game (when he's back) and I suspect we will. Put Brockel in at FB and let Tolbert pound the defense, then bring in DeAngelo/Barner when the defense is worn out for a change of pace.

The more I watch our oline struggle, the more I realize how much we're going to need the read option to create running lanes.

Fans don't want to hear this, but DeAngelo is a wily veteran and may be making "career decisions" during these preseason games. On the other hand, Barner is a young buck trying to prove himself by diving head-long into the fray.

Not making excuses for DeAngelo, just pointing out something that needs to be considered... when the real games start you may see DeAngelo be more aggressive.

But that doesn't explain why Williams was so average in the majority of our games last with poor OL play

This reminds me of the "Foster or Williams" discussions we had in the Fox era.

Barner showed us that he just can't block worth diddly last night, so I expect Williams to be in there just to provide Newton with a little protection

Would like to use barner in the slot some and get him in space. Also, would like to see power I with Tolbert at fullback. Barner is going to need work at pass blocking, but if our OC is competent, we can incorporate some 3 step drops whenever barner is in.

I am worried we may not see J-Stew this season.

This is what I'm most afraid of when it comes to the running game given the O-Line woes.

Having both healthy and Cam as a running threat is about the only thing that makes for a complete backfield.  J-Stew and D-Will are both very one-sided backs.  Always have been.

Given things as they are, Tolbert may actually have more success.  Barner, maybe.  He needs experience, and boy, it looks like he's gonna get it.

I think this ends up being a twofold decision.

It's no disrespect to DWill because with a halfway fug-worthy OL he's a WAY better back, BUT!  Barner, by virtue of his young bullheaded "hit the first hole as hard as you can" style will gain more yards behind the piss poor one we have.  This will earn him more carries than he might have received if we had said fug-worthy OL.

Trick is DWill is the better pass protector and we DO have that piss poor OL.  DWill will have to still get enough carries that him being in doesn't scream "yo they're passing" so the probably outcome is roughly the same split that DWill and JStew had when we weren't trying to force one of them to be the "starter"

We should start collecting money and send Zod to scouting classes or something

DWill/Stew<anybody else.

An argument as old as the chicken vs the egg on the Huddle

Same answer, Hurney stupidity gave DWill a contract any player in the NFL would gladly sign.

The Panthers will continue to try and get some value out of our previously brain dead GM's contracts given to DWill and DStew.

Patience is the only answer until this albatross is raised from the Offenses' backs (pun intended).

Barner is a specialist, and must be put in situations he can succeed in, the rest of the RB corp must do their part.

Hear me out. Our oline is so bad we should rest cam this year and start Jimmy. What happened the last time we started Jimmy? We got Cam. This year we get Clowney. Trade hardy and 2014 dare I say it. Super Bowl

Is Barner a better option behind a god awful offensive line? Maybe so.
