dear mods,

i've noticed an average of like three threads a day being locked because of incessant bickering. i contend that as annoying as bickering is, it's part of what makes the huddle fun. personal attacks should be discouraged, but anytime a large number of people are discussing football you're going to get some keyboard roughhousing. smacking a lock on something because people are arguing gives the place a suddenly over-modded feel.

also: personal attacks serve the same function on a message board that they do in society: they are self-correcting mechanisms. if every twiddlededum fugbox that meanders onto the forum with the IQ of a kitchen appliance and makes a thread and no one is allowed to call it stupid (because it is) because of the rules of niceness then we lose the invaluable ability to constantly self-calibrate on the forum just like we do in society every day.

in modding, less = more

There's a difference between bickering about a subject and the "you are, no you are..." Bickering that's often seen.

Is that what's getting locked?

If a thread is locked, I'll rarely view it so idk...

Don't lock? People complain

Do lock? People complain

All we can do is what we feel best, knowing it will get complained about no matter what we do.

We are trying to elevate the discussion in the main forum. The quality has gone down as of late. Everyone can help by stopping the incessant bickering and posting more quality.

modding is a fine line and part of the reason I wouldn't want the job. seems to me the best policy is establishing a line ( which everybody kind of knows anyway) and smacking with the ban hammer when an idiot goes past it too far. kurb seems to have mastered this art

rather it be locked than gifbombing a stupid thread so it more or less stays at the top of the page so every idiot can get their jabs in
