Simply pull a "Pearl Jam."

Essentially disappear for several years, don't tour, occasionally leak something new, let Eddie Vedder show up at the 12/12/12 concert and sing "Comfortably Numb," followed by rumors of a new album.

The announce tour and new album release. Sell out.

let's not kid ourselves, they wouldn't have to do that.

if dave grohl and krist novoselic toured again as "nirvana" with some kid they found passably aping cobain on youtube they'd be playing stadiums with no supporting act

Except that they haven't ever disappeared or didn't tour.  They may have taken an easier year and did less dates but usually the next year it's back on the road, few bands tour as much as Pearl Jam. and they also have a lot of international fans.   Most of their albums were barely 3 years apart with the new one being like 4 which is the most ever.

Ten may be my least played, actually.  I enjoy it though.  Vs, No Code, Yield are also great.  I really love the self-titled from 2006 though.  Their early 200's were pretty good too.  Backspacer (the last one) I haven't listened to a ton though, but it was solid.  You can't say PJ sold out, they changed their sound to a more mature sound in the 2000's and it didn't make them any MORE money than they were making.  They make the music they want, hardly selling out.

Michael Jackson's name wouldn't even sell that house for 500k.
