They should just change their name to the noise we made as kids patting our hands over our mouths and yelling thinking it was some sort of Indian battle cry

the wah-wah-wahs?

sounds like saints fans

Could always call them the Washington Politicians. They spend a whole bunch of money on stuff that doesn't work. Hire Rex Ryan to be their coach and promise a couple Super Bowls which of course he can't deliver and then fire him after 4 years.

Calling them politicians would be insulting to the football players.  :)

here's a rick reilly article on espn that sort of sums the argument against renaming it

as you can see it's filled with false equivalencies like "the name 'chiefs' is literally the same thing as a racial slur" and "if you're going to change the redskins name you're basically putting the indians back in reservations" and other brainless metaphors that ignore the rules of linear parallels in favor of being able to say whatever you want as long as it supports your predetermined conclusions and aren't "politically correct"

But seriously. How long until other religious groups get offend that the saints are a nfl team and they feel excluded and charge to get the name changed?

I know this is off topic but in NJ you have schools banning father daughter dances because some girls don't have fathers. Instead of letting girls bring father figures or mothers who take up their fathers roll they completely get rid of the whole thing so no one can participate. Some times this PC thing goes way to far.

I know anecdotal evidence isn't really welcome here but I have speech class with a woman in her early 30's who is half Indian and she informed my class that some tribes don't even like to be called Native American and that they prefer Indian. Something I didn't know.

I guess my point is who are we to say it is or isn't racist or a slur when you have like the article pointed out people of the culture who wear it with pride. Some PC is a slippery slop mostly aimed to delete instead of fix. Like if the Washington redskins made a whole culture fan day or make the whole month of October since that's when Columbus Day falls (that's been a big issue with most of their culture) that taught about the culture they represent, to celebrate it, and make it personal to their team would that help things? Maybe idk. I just don't think deleting the name really does any good

do you know what a false equivalency is?

Well clearly we need to keep the name "Redskins" to honor the legacy of the man who gave them the name, George Preston Marshall, owner of the team from 1932-1969.  He changed the name in 1933, and famously only allowed white players on the team until 1962 even though the rest of the NFL was integrated in 1946.  In fact, the team was only integrated because the federal government threatened to revoke the Redskins' stadium lease

So bravo to the team for upholding his legacy so well, though if they truly wanted to honor him I think they should release RG3 and find a more suitable man to lead the team

So religious activists are on the same level as animal activists? Ok gotcha religion is a huge thing in this country. That's not out of the realm of possibility. But thanks not even addressing the point I made at all. Keeps an actual dialogue on the issue to not happen.

It's always white people who want to rant and rave about "PC nonsense". What do those minorities know anyways.

Ya know, we make thoughtful comparisons to this situation in saying if it was this way, the name would already be gone.  For instance, if the team was named the Washington Coloreds.  However, there is a similar situation to this that is already in existence.  Yesterday we were talking about that guy who was waving the confederate flag outside the white house.  Now, that guy did a foolish thing of course, but there are a lot of people who proudly display that flag and they don't see a problem with it.  They say it's for heritage reasons, but I would like to ask them are they sad the south lost the civil war?  When they wear that flag, to me that says they really wanted the south to win.  Had they won, american slavery would have been extended, and perhaps it would have still been going on today. (Slavery only ended 149 years ago I believe)  Or perhaps had they won, America wouldn't have become the superpower that it is today, because other ethnic groups wouldn't have been as involved in a "South" controlled country.  Also the South wouldn't have been as forgiving as the North have been to them.  So when people say they wear the flag because of heritage reasons, what in the world kind of heritage are you talking about?  I can understand you had ancestors who fought in the confederacy and all that, but understand what the confederacy itself represented.  When you wear that flag, you are essentially saying you wished the south won in my eyes.

So I see this issue over the name change as similar to people who wear and wave the confederate flag.  People are stingy, and want to keep with tradition even though the tradition came out of essentially having a superior view over other ethnic groups.
