Per Steve Smith, that phrase has been said to him four times in his Panthers career.

Smith has been played under George Seifert, John Fox, and Ron Rivera. He stated that Rivera was not one of the coaches that said that. He did not definitively state it came from a head coach.

Who would you suspect is the culprit(s)?

My prime suspect too, but I kinda suspect Fox might have said it too. Specifically, around the time of the Ken Lucas incident.

Smitty has said some things before that make me believe there's no love lost between him and Seifert.

One of them has to be Jeff Davidson. On the hot seat most of his career, and didn't seem to think much of Steve.
