Atwill asserts that Christianity did not really begin as a religion, but a sophisticated government project, a kind of propaganda exercise used to pacify the subjects of the Roman Empire. "Jewish sects in Palestine at the time, who were waiting for a prophesied warrior Messiah, were a constant source of violent insurrection during the first century," he explains. "When the Romans had exhausted conventional means of quashing rebellion, they switched to psychological warfare. They surmised that the way to stop the spread of zealous Jewish missionary activity was to create a competing belief system. That's when the 'peaceful' Messiah story was invented. Instead of inspiring warfare, this Messiah urged turn-the-other-cheek pacifism and encouraged Jews to 'give onto Caesar' and pay their taxes to Rome."

Was Jesus based on a real person from history? "The short answer is no," Atwill insists, "in fact he may be the only fictional character in literature whose entire life story can be traced to other sources. Once those sources are all laid bare, there's simply nothing left."

For anyone interested in world religions this is a pretty interesting take.

Seemed Tinderbox worthy as some of you are well versed in spotting government propaganda.

Islam confirmed Jesus existed... They even call him "the man without a sin" in Koran.

Too many eye witnesses of his existence.

Some people still believe concentration camps never existed and Jewish never got mass murdered by nazis... There are always be people that denying history.

Islam confirmed Jesus existed...

Huh?

Islam is based on a man walking into the dessert and meeting the angel Gabriel who revealed to him the actual true religion 600 years after the time of Jesus.

If you call that confirming... well....

Maybe because temple with all records was destroyed in 70 AD? Remember, only few people back in the day could write and read.

Islam is way older than that... Ishmael the son of Abraham who is mostly responsible for starting Islam. Islam as religion never took off until Muhammad.

If the Roman Empire created Christianity, why didn't the empire embrace it until Constantine legalized it in 313?

Maybe covered in the article but admittedly didn't read.

Incorrect. Islam was started around 600ad. They only claim in their dogma to have been started much earlier. Thats like saying if I wrote I was actually born in 1900 it would be true.

Also, Romans prohibited Christianity. That's why Dead Sea scrolls were hidden in the caves. Dead Sea scrolls are carbon dated from 308 BC to 70 AD and actually confirm many biblical stories.

Getting the jews to be peaceful and not wanting to feed them to lions are two very different things.

sorry, but no.

People in the middle east prior to Islam were followers of other Abrahamic religions (Christianity or Judaism), or they were followers of local polytheistic religions. Muhammad founded the religion in Mecca, but he was driven out by the followers of the local dominant religion. He retreated to Medina and his followers later to Ethiopia where the Christian king there gave them sanctuary.

Islam itself started with Muhammad around 600 AD. It incorporated much of the foundation of the other Abrahamic religions, so I suppose you can say its roots are much older than 600 AD, but the religion itself is not.

The dead sea scrolls have nothing to do with Christianity. They were older jewish writings.
