David Newton: Shula Proving To Be The Right Choice

46 posts in this topic

It's too early for this.

Perhaps. The San Fransisco, New England and Saints games will be huge barometers, but after a slow start (not unfamiliar with this team) the offense hasn't been the complete train wreck many seemed to expect.

Arizona was sending pressure up the middle time and time again. At the end of the first half it briefly looked like Shula got it when he had Cam roll out with a run/pass option and run a few zone reads. Yet in the second half we just chucked the whole game plan that worked and kept Cam in the pocket to get killed.

The o-line was really porous that game while Arizona did a good job of blitzing.  Still if not for dropped passes we would have been up by 17 at least.  In the second half we still kept it close until very late again making critical errors.  We didn't chuck the game plan at all but it seemed that nothing worked.  I can't say it was his best plan for sure and I am sure he made some mistakes but that would have been easily forgotten if we had built a big lead instead of letting them hang around.

The game plan against Arizona was hot zoo garbage.

We moved the ball all day against Zona. Just because we settled for two field goals, a interception, and s turnover on downs doesn't mean the game plan was bad.

4th quarter was pretty bad though

The Cards game was one of our better games in terms of yards.

I already stated I will eat crow if he can put together a game plan against the Pats and 9ers. So far he hasn't had to adjust unless you count the Cardinals and Seahawks games.

I know you manned up..............I was just being a dick.

Sorry, not buying it.  I get that the players like him, and that counts for something I guess.  But Shula has had about as bad a career as you can have as a major college and NFL coach and still be employable, the fact that the offense looked good 3 straight weeks against bad teams isn't enough to start heaping praise on him.  I hope I'm wrong and the offense keeps producing, and if we end the season with double digit wins and a top 10 offense I'll happily admit I was off base.  But I still think we downgraded schematically when Chud left.

In every single game we've had this year I have questioned what our adjustments would be. So far, aside from a few early games, Shula is showing that he's got the balls and that starts with Chico. The HC has to exude that confidence too, or else the OC will shrivel just the same. No coordinator is gonna feel good about their game plan if the other half cant produce. It would greatly affect how you perceive scenarios.

I think they both may have turned a corner in their careers.

Not true at all.  We may have had 6 points but we had well over 200 yards of offense in the first half alone.  If we don't drop those easy TD catches we are up big and cruising instead of pressing and throwing picks late.  The game plan was fine but the execution was not.

i think he is referring to in-game adjustments, or lack-thereof.  they repeatedly sent blitzes up the middle and we didnt account for them, whether it be lack of execution or strategy.  The playaction inside the five to me was his worst call of the year.

so what you're saying is the first half game plan was fine.

2nd half was terrrrrrrrrrrrible.

maybe cam was audibling into those long-developing pass plays, I dunno, but I think the coaching deserves some harassment for that.

Shula has already proven to our best OC since Henning.

I'm glad he's finding success.

I don't expect the nay sayers to change their tune at all, til a championship is won.

Their choice.
