sooooo i came across this article this morning, thought about sharing it on social media, decided not to, and then decided to. 60 comments later most of the flames have been extinguished, but i guess i asked for it since a huge portion of my friends (and a healthy majority of the commenters) attended fundamentalist evangelical christian academies in lieu of college.

anyway here's the article

The stars of "Duck Dynasty" might be America's most popular TV family, but that could change very soon — because Phil Robertson has made some seriously divisive anti-gay remarks that have sparked instant backlash.

Speaking with GQ, Robertson lamented that when "everything is blurred on what's right and what's wrong ... sin becomes fine." So just what qualifies as sinful in his book?

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there — bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," he declared.

Phil probably should have cut himself off at this point (considering he's a national TV star), but instead he paraphrased Corinthians. "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God," he warned. "Don't deceive yourself. It's not right."

What's more, according to him, it's basically incomprehensible. "It seems to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man's anus," he explained. "That's just me. I'm just thinking, 'There's more there! She's got more to offer.' I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical."

homosexuality: Just Not Logical

anyway the article talks about GLAAD's response and then we get this gem:

Despite Phil's strong words, however, he insists he's a Christian who doesn't condemn others — even if they are "sinners" in his mind.

"We never, ever judge someone on who's going to heaven, hell. That's the Almighty's job," he told the magazine. "We just love 'em, give 'em the good news about Jesus — whether they're homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort 'em out later, you see what I'm saying?

gays: literally terrorists in the context of eternal dividends

anyway as i said i got assloads of responses, one of the best of which was this one

ScreenShot2013-12-18at72709PM_zps44893ed

...which is a fairly typical response. i always find it interesting that fundamentalists find it so easy to say incredibly hateful and derisive things like "homosexuals and terrorists will be judged by god" and then the moment somebody says "hey look how this fundamentalist said homosexuals and terrorists will be judged by god, that's not nice" they line up and start shrieking about oppression and persecution and how it's gettin' to where a fella can't even have an opinion anymore because of the liberal touchy-feely culture where nobody gets to be offended well guess what I'M OFFENDED blah blah blah

anywho it made me think of this

1484198_10100978211787781_1271371175_n.j

now let's talk about how Phil Robertson and the duck dynasty show has become sort of a cultural icon for right-wing conservatives who rally to the torch of good old-fashioned american's standing up for what they believe in and furiously beat off whenever they hear about the network asking them to tone down the constant jesus talk and were refuted and rebuked by papa duck and in general how ridiculous this is (or isn't if you believe it isn't)

I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong. Sin becomes fine," he later added. “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Don’t be deceived. No kidding Phil, I like the vagina more too. It has nothing to do with this.

“I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

Rock Bottom = being gay apparently

Hey this is God, I love all of humanity but sorry, you gay people I created? It's off to Hell with you.

on a more serious, less editorial note, i would like to use the facebook response by that one person as an example of how fundamental echo chambers and monological data inputs are to maintaining grips on belief systems.

in simpler terms, this person is an example of what happens when you're surrounded your entire life by people espousing one single point of view, one single belief system. if you never hear anything that opposes it (or are simply taught what the opposition says by people who oppose it and provide a distorted view of it) you're never forced to challenge your own belief or to reconcile it with an opposing argument. that's why it's possible to actually say "nobody can stand for what they believe anymore" and mean it with sincerely. that's the kind of statement that bonks around an echo chamber and accepted as a fact of life upon which more beliefs are eventually hitched until it becomes an integral part of a belief system that cannot be challenged.

more broadly, and on a more personal note, i have found it increasingly harder to be angry with people for having opinions like this; even to the extreme, like a guy who i didn't screen-cap who posted something to the effect of "there's nothing wrong with his statement that gays are the same as terrorists in terms of their eternal destination, it's a fair comparison." that's an asshole thing to believe, objectively speaking, but when you start analyzing belief systems - religiously, politically, whatever - you realize that to a large extent you never get to actually chose what you believe. you're not handed a menu at birth and told to pick what you're going to believe. if you're born to a family of mormons in the U.S., you're going to inherit that belief system, be socialized in it, and more than likely grow up as a mormon and practice it (in spite of being surrounded by non-mormons.) in fact this is a case example of how powerful nuclear forces of socialization like places of worship and family structure are.

so i don't blame these people for their beliefs any more than i blame a man born into saudi arabian society in riyadh for believing that women are inferior and shouldn't able to drive. he didn't come to that conclusion by himself, it was socially imbued upon him by a culture whose practice defined his behavior. i don't agree with it, and i think it's abhorrent, but i cannot blame him for his position. he is the subject of forces far greater, far more powerful than his own individual agency.

i have found this approach to be far more conducive to understanding human beings than pulling out ideological baseball bats, which seem to get us nowhere.

I suppose most of the US might have reason to be offended.

"adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers"

Christian fundamentalists lose sight that a lot of sinners have been a part of God's plan. Moses was a murderer .
