"Cornerback: Captain Munnerlyn, Carolina

Contract: One year, $1.1 million

The Panthers let Munnerlyn hit the free-agent market last offseason before re-signing him to a one-year deal. He was expected to compete for a spot as a slot corner, but with injuries and poor play ahead of him, Munnerlyn has stepped in and become the team's top cornerback. Alongside undrafted free agent Melvin White (who would be on this list if it included rookie UFAs), the Panthers have the cheapest pair of starting cornerbacks in football. They also have the league's fifth-best pass defense. Much of that is the pass rush, but the secondary deserves at least a small amount of credit. Marcus Cooper would be on this team, but he's still on his rookie deal from the 49ers in Kansas City. And Brandon Browner would have been a perennial candidate for this spot in recent years as a CFL refugee, but injuries, erratic play, and his eventual suspension keep him off the list this year.

Safety: Mike Mitchell, Carolina

Contract: 1 year, $725,000

Another member of the Carolina defense appears! Mitchell has filled the Donte Whitner role for the Panthers, as a bruising safety who uses his infamous speed to get in the box and make plays. He has lit up the stat sheet this year, with 2.5 sacks, four interceptions, seven pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. Carolina might not have the cap space to keep him next season, and he's limited in coverage, but Mitchell has gone from nearly out of the league to a starter on a top-five defense."

They better play like it Sunday, and not repeat whatever that was two weeks ago.

The fact Mitchell is making 725 k is shocking.

He wants a bigger payday we can tell that on the field.

Panthers should drop/trade Godfrey so they can pay him. Maybe Mitchell will be reasonable about his contract & want to stay so he can win some rings. And yes, I said ring (s).

I dont know that we can afford to start White over Florence this week. White has been absolutely awful since the NE game.

Mitchell has been a good safety for us considering the circumstances. He's not great in coverage like Grantland has alluded to but he's a playmaker and given swagger to our weak secondary.

iirc cutting godfrey would hit us with 5m in dead money

unless gettleman does something magical there's a pretty good chance godfrew will be here next year eating up 7m of our cap space

I'm really surprised none of our running backs made it

Interesting.  According to the article, Geoff Schwartz will be a UFA again after this year.  Maybe we should look at picking him up to shore up our RG situation?

We probably are and should. I how Kugbila ends up being at least serviceable.

Maybe it is wishful thinking due to cap restraints, but Mitchell and Hardy are "must bring back" players.

I was worried about Mitchell's aggressiveness hurting us with ill timed penalties, but so far he has been awesome. Really want him back

I'd like to think we could retain both Cap and Mitchell for 3-4 mil a year.  I'd say its worth it.  Both are flawed players, but they play important roles.  Cap is as good a slot guy that you can get, plus he's versatile (blitzing, dangerous with the ball in his hands).

I'll admit he's worth twice that, unless we can find something comparable for cheap.
