And the answer is never on your fuging roster. Thinking it is, is the reason 12-4 teams go 7-9 the next year.

I guess we just have to hope the BPA when we pick is a WR..

i hope it is OL and DB. He did mention secondary and OL.which I was glad to hear. I have doubts he is all BPA but i do think his plan to fill needs in FA is solid plan.

It is kinda of interesting to say Steve Smith is part of the evaluation process. Makes me wonder if he is going to ask for a pay cut. I don't think you can cut Steve right? He has been the heart of the panthers for a long time. He is going to make roughly 7 mil in 2014 and 2015 and 9 mil in 2016. :/

When Gettlemen started talking about the 'nutsy screen' and 'hoochie screen' I thought he was talking about the birds and the bees. My theory is that these are different types of condoms.

His hands are pretty well tied with the RB's. I'm very excited to see where we are when he finally gets a handle in the cap and can really implement his plan.

Thanks to Hurney, that'll still be a few more years from now

If you have to evaluate your best fuging WR is that a sign that uhh maybe you need some talent at the position.

Gettleman is still keeping those cards very close to the vest. He is not committing to anything or anyone (except Cam) until the cap number is in, and the evaluation process is over. Link via NFL.com

When pressed on Hardy, he continues that same "part of the puzzle" business:

Much more likely than a long-term contract is the one-year, $12.5 franchise tag, but Gettleman wouldn't commit to anything at the NFL Scouting Combine, simply calling Hardy "part of the puzzle."

"Every team is going to use everything in their bag to get it done," Gettleman said of the tag. "So, who knows? I don't know."

On Cap:

When Gregg Rosenthal asked Gettleman if Munnerlyn is Carolina's best corner, the front-office man remained vague, saying: "We're still evaluating."

On Smitty:

For a team so thin at wide receiver, Steve Smith is a lock to keep his job, right? We thought so, but Gettleman wouldn't commit to the wideout when pressed. Asked if there's any chance the Panthers would part ways with Smith -- set to make $4 million guaranteed along with a $3 million bonus -- Gettleman said: "Steve's had a great career, and (super-long pause) the bottom line is, it's part of the evaluation process."

On Gross:

Asked if Gross would automatically land a new deal if he wants to play in 2014, Gettleman stopped short of a guarantee, reminding reporters (again) that "we're cap challenged," but "Jordan Gross has earned the right to make this decision."

If G-man stays the course and sticks to his principles then he is NOT going to overspend.  He is going to work within his own fiscally conservative confines to manage this super tight budget.

Gettleman said Carolina won't stray from the strategy it employed last offseason, floating affordable one-year deals to players they like but don't love. "We don't have a choice," the GM said as he bemoaned the slow growth of the cap. "What hasn't happened yet is the agents and the players don't understand that the money isn't there the way it used to be."

Hmmm, I wonder who he is talking about (excluding Hardy which is probably a given).

I suppose that we can all take solace in the fact that Cam is our guy, if nothing else.  IF we take G-man at his word, all other bets are off.

just my .02...

i think he's quite aware that he only really has one WR under contract heading into next year. i think he'll try to address that in FA, just like all other needs.

going into the draft he's not going to avoid WR and he's not going to favor OL or CB over WR or anything else. he's gonna go BPA, just like he said. it's a very strong class of OTs, CBs, and WRs and there are some very good TEs in the draft as well. chances are that im the first four rounds there will be plenty of options of each and there may very well be a WR when we pick. we could double dip at OT or at WR. it all depends on who is there at the top of the list when we pick. heading into the draft and limiting our options to just one or even two positions would be a mistake.

as far as him not doing anything because "the answer is on the roster" at WR  isn't going to happen because, well, all there is is smith. he'll bring in more talent. i feel good at our chances of getting a really good WR or two in the draft are good. we'll get our upgrade on the OL and cam will get a new weapon or two because it's obvious to everyone that we need that (and even gettleman said that).

at OT i'd look at the really big OTs, and at WR i'd look at WRs who already runs good routes, has good hands, and a diverse route tree. at TE i'd look fore guys who are more of the traditional inline blocker who juat happens to be a good receiver. at CB i'd look at guys who were fast and aggressive and keeps their head in a swivel (size might not matter) who coyld be considered a tweener CB/S and who have done some blitzing. at DE i'd look for guys who, like hardy, can be plugged anywhere along the DL so they'd be bigger guys pushing 285-295 lbs.

i also wouldn't be surprised to see us draft another RB, but it would probably be one who is really good catching balls out of the backfield.
