... is an object when you have 21 spaces on your roster because of free agents and draft picks to sign.

What sorcery is this. Madden franchise mode, engage!

Really though, I wish we could afford a legit left tackle. Sad face.

If we replace Gross it'll be in the draft or in FA with a mid-level guy like Anthony Collins of the Bengals until we can address LT long-term in the draft.

8-9 mil per year is substantially lower than 12 mil per year. Veldheer ain't getting Hardy money. That would be insane on its own merit, not to mention that a few other LTs will be on the market also.

The franchise tag for a left tackle this year is 11.25m. He's not going to go for anything less than that. Much like how everyone said in the other thread that Cam would no way take less than the franchise number for a QB.

If no one is willing to pay 11.25 mil per year to Veldheer, which is highly likely, then he ain't getting 11.25 mil per year.  The market will determine what he is worth.  You're assuming that he is a top 5 LT in the league, and you're not taking into account his perceived injury history.

Like the writer said in his analysis, smart teams will only tag a player if they are actually top 5 at their position. We aren't in a position to throw top 5 money at players who aren't top 5, and the writer suggests that the Raiders GM will not sacrifice the long term for short term gain either, notwithstanding that they have plenty of cap space because it's not good business.

iirc, the contracts signed for the top LTs in FA last year were around $8mil/year. i don't see this crop getting much more than that. the franchise tag isn't a good gauge on what LTs will be signing for.

Hes a very good LT, his contract will be interesting seeing as he missed most of the season with a tricep tear.  But the Raiders have plenty of money to spend and its hard imagining him getting out of Oakland.

Perceived injury history? He had never missed a game before last season when he tore his triceps. That's false information. Here's a blurb on him from Evan silva:

6. Left tackle Jared Veldheer -- Had never missed an NFL game before tearing triceps last August. Started final five contests, allowing two sacks. Allowed five sacks across 16 starts the year before. Outstanding pass protector throughout career and not a liability in run game. Highly athletic at 6-foot-8, 312. Expressed displeasure with Raiders' pace of contract talks in early February.

If there is 1 position you want to spend money on besides QB, it's LT. We shouldn't dumpster dive for Cam's protection.

I understand that, but the team isn't going to have the money to pay a LT 8-10 million a season plus fill out the rest of the team.

Adding that for a Lt gives the Panthers like 12 million to replace 20 guys with a large amount of them being starters.

To be fare, player would actually take a deal under the franchise money if it offers long term security.  11.25 mill this year with a possibility of career ending is worst than 8-9 mill a year average but with a huge signing bonus.
