I would freak if it didn't seem like Gettleman was restructuring contracts to give us enough cap to bring players in....oh wait he already is. People need to step away from the cliff until we see how our GM addresses it. Gettleman is a planner so I doubt this is a shock to him. It shouldn't be to us either, we all knew it was a possibility. I think we will sign a FA and take a tackle in the top 3 rounds.

The biggest affect may be on Hardy's contract. I have to think Gettleman will see a starting LT as a bigger priority than a DE. This may have been what he was waiting to hear before tagging Hardy or making him/Captain/Mitchell contract offers. Gross wasn't going to play for free next year so either way we were allocating a chunk of cap toward a LT.

I wonder how most of you would feel if Kalil announced he was retiring?

Seriously, Jordan has always said he wants to be apart of the organization after retiring. Any word on that?

Well, like I said in the other thread, the positives here is that Gross is healthy and happy, it's better to have happened now than a draft year where OT talent is shallow and he's one less expensive FA we have to worry about.

good perspective. it's never ideal to lose a cornerstone of your team like that, but if it's going to happen this year is about as good a year as it could be.

still sucks, but we'll be ok.

Bigger loss in the locker room IMO. Thought we'd take a tackle in the first round and I think this reinforces that. However, Gettleman has said that free agency is a tool to allow yourself to take the best player available in the draft and I think he'll find someone in free agency, at least in terms of depth. This is a tough loss but some youth may not be so bad.

Gettlemagic Spell for an Offensive Line:

  • Double dip on DTs first 2 picks in draft when OT/OG is a need
  • Reach on  "project" O-lineman with last viable draft pick
  • Neglect O-line rest of draft
  • Neglect O-line in free agency
  • Sign mediocre former Panther to "sure up" the line
  • Convert Defensive Tackle to starting O-lineman
  • Say sacred incantation of hope that aging LT plans to stick around

Abra-Ka-Fuggin-Dabra!

Gettleman has a lot to prove this year. He mismanaged (to put it gently) our O-line last year, and set us up for this clusterfug this year. Don't hate Gross for leaving this year, because if he did, for all we know, Gettleman would have put off fixing the line another year, and next year Gross would be asked for, "just one more year, dude! Come on! Be cool! One more year. I swear we'll fix it this year."

No run game? Weak WRs? and a pooty OL?

Doesn't matter if we are the 85 Bears D. Cam needs help and we don't look to be able to address it for 2014. A shame.

yep. we all knew that this was likely. probably more so for those involved with the team. it should be no surprise and far froma blind side. i'm sure gettleman has already been scouting and planning anticipating that gross was done.
