Over The Cap weighs in on Hardy FT, Smitty

He did it despite franchise QB Cam Newton entering the final year of his rookie deal and despite the contract of reigning DPOY Luke Kuechly expiring after 2015.

these 2 points are being made a much bigger deal than it's relevance..  Cam has his own version of a FT next year and Kuechly isn't even close..  DWill's contract will be a much bigger release to sign either one of these guys up front and next year this 13mil FT is instantly freed up..  Where if Hardy is resigned will cost more around 3-4 mil at the most in the form of a cap hit.

which by this time Godfrey's dead money will be gone (assuming he's released this year after June 1st)...  And we are all another year closer to seeing JStew's money come off the books in another 2 years..  In other words, both Kuechly and Cam will long be signed by the time any significant cap hits start to grow feet...

This money that is going to "roll over" this year is no different than watching this 13 mil "roll over" next year...  Granted we can't sign Hakeem Nicks with that money now..

The wisdom of this move is lost in the numbers and the writer's inability to analyze all possible future scenarios.  For example, what if Hardy has 9 sacks in 2014?  What if CJ restructures his deal?  Smitty drops about $3 million off his cap figure?  I think there is about $10m to be found by looking into those situations.

The OL concerns me.  When I read articles about Bell playing LT because he is left handed, I get very concerned.

Hardy is staying and 89 need to learn that hes not young anymore.

Also, Gman could go DBs heavy in the draft.

on this note 89 should be glad this franchise is finally being run the way he's wanted it..  you can't get moved to the slot when the team is being run like the last Panthers "dynasty"..  Vets only last so long without a consistent rejuvenation through the draft; which also goes hand in hand with consistent success and a manageable cap.

pretty much we're betting on this draft.

which is exactly what this team has to do every year if they expect to find consistent success year in and year out...

tagging Greg may just be a way to get some value for him via trade, but

I hope he plays with us next year.

Building through the draft require a lot of patience. On the other hand, nothing worse than sign a FA with big money and then wanting to trade him the following year, like Mike Wallace.

Let's use receiver as an example, do we draft a new #1 receiver or go get Nicks, pay him a ton of money when he's not exactly been amazing the last two years, I did like Maclin but he's resigned, other than that there's nobody outhere looking at the list of free agents at receiver who makes you think wow go get him, so maybe were better to draft our future #1 and continue to build through the draft and hope we pickup guys like Seattle seem to.

GMan better address the oline...otherwise Cam is going to get injured with Bell playing LT.

I think the BPA approach is going to difficult with the holes we have. We need 2 WR's, 2 OL and 2 DB's at the moment and it is going to be difficult to get any FA to fill those needs. Here's to hoping the draft yields use a starter at each of those positions. Sent from my Nexus 7 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

keep in mind that every teams draft board is different......... therefore the BPA's are not the same.

Believe me.......our BPA's will lean towards positions of need and number of studs at said position.

I see what overthecap is saying, it's hard to act, talk, and restructure like you're in cap hell then turn around and give up half of your available space to one player leaving 20 others to sign.

I realize the future looks brighter with Beason's dead money expiring and the cap is expected to keep rising, but in the present it's hard to justify. For that reason I don't think this is the last we've heard of Hardy news. At the very least expect more restructures or cuts especially if Hardy is expected to stay on the tag.
