Panthers Interested In Eric Decker and Hakeem Nicks

Recommended Posts

Guy's I know this isnt a popular idea becuase of the legend status of Steve Smith, but Smith is done as a #1 and he's getting payed #1 money, we need some new help at WR terribly bad, yeah you might not like it, but it may be better for the Panthers to Cut Smith and go with another reciver for the money we are paying him currently.

I'm not talking about the smith from 5-7 years ago to which I'd agree would be crazy talk, we are talking about the Smith of today and it's not that crazy.

Both of these WR's are top class, but we need to keep in mind that Eric Decker had Peyton Manning throwing to him. Nicks has Peytons idiot brother throwing to him.

Considering there is one WR on the roster, I'd assume Panthers will be tied to any WR FA..

Decker you can cross off the list - too much $$$

He maybe, but you don't know until you see what he is asking for and all. Don't be to sure that we might now be able to get him. With the draft been so deep at WRs this year. The stock for WRs in  the FA market may drop this year. So let's hold that thought until we see what moves DG makes in the next few days are so.

OTC has us at 6.6M in cap space, while spotrac has it at 7.2.

Need to get CJ to restructure and extend Hardy. Will free up around 10-15M in room. June 1st Godfrey and we have ~ 20M in room.

Nicks is probably more feasible than Decker but meeting with Decker and hearing what he wants can't hurt.

Clayton said that our interest in Decker would be contingent on us cutting Steve Smith. No thanks.

Most of us love and respect Smith for his years of service. But time to move on from Smith. Decker is much younger player and pretty good WR. He ain't great, but he is solid. At this point Smith is old and just about finish. If some how we can land both Nicks and Decker for a reasonable price. We should take it. Even if it means letting lose Smith. Time moves on and does to the Panthers. The NFL is a business and all the players understand that. Some fans just don't.

Excerpt from NFL.com

With that in mind, I've compiled a list of the riskiest free agents, Schein Nine style:

1) Eric Decker, wide receiver

History warns against overpaying secondary receivers with the expectation that they'll assume No. 1 status. Alvin Harper and Peerless Price are classic examples.

Decker had another strong season for the Broncos, catching 87 passes for 1,288 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. But he did it with Peyton Manning and theBroncos. You can make the case that Decker was thefourth-most-feared pass catcher in that attack, behindDemaryius ThomasWes Welker and Julius Thomas.

I wouldn't throw a ton of money at Decker. I wouldn't expect him to put up the same numbers and consistently beat solid cornerbacks. One NFC general manager explained to me: "I think he's really about to be overpaid. He's a nice player, but he's a product of the system and an all-time great quarterback."

No thanks - I'm not over paying for a #2 WR to be our #1 when we have multiple holes on the OL and limited cap space as it is

And hopefully Smitty does indeed take a pay cut. We should keep him whether he would or not, but if he did it would help tremendously. Then we could sign Nicks, draft Benjamin and put Smitty in the slot. Instantly one of the best receiving corps in the league.

so what are you going to get for what you save with Smith? Not a Decker or a Nicks. What are you calling #1 money?

We can do a early June 1st designation I beleive if we wanted to, and if CJ does restruct which I doubt it would be nearer to $3-6m and Hardy would maybe be $3m in savings if anything at all(remember Hardy has been playing for Penuts on his Rookie Contract, I'd doubt he would be willing to take a hit for much of anything at all. we've already restructured Johnson for more guaranteed money, and I'm not exactly sure what we could do much if anything to his $16m hit this year.

Even if we cut smith, which im opposed to, and sign one of these wideouts to a deal I dont see where we will have enough money to resign others like Ted Ginn and Mike Mitchell. I would just want gettleman to sign a Starting tackle and we draft a wide reciever in the draft.

I'm talking about the remainder of Smith's contract which is I belive 3 more years left and is for #1 money at the time it was signed, we might not save a lot this year but I think if my memory is right we could save somewhere between $9-10m over the next two years by cutting him.

the NFL is about cost versus value, right now after next season I'd be suprised if Dwill and Stewart and Godfrey are still on the team, all those guys have vastly underperformed since being signed to their contracts and we be cut yesterday if not fot the cap hit we would take.

Smith in the Cost versus value chart just isnt there and it's not going to get better going forward.

I think our plan may be to get them to sign on the cheap this year with a bigger hit next, our Cap is going to open up a lot next year, even with everything going on right now we could get in the $30+ million in cap space once we off load some of these dead contracts, now with that said you have to wonder how much of that money will be going to Cam and keek though.
