You realize that we would sign the same guys either way? Yah Steve might have 7 mil in cap for this year, but the hit is too much. Would you rather have Smitty or Jacoby Ford?

Would I rather spend more money on a 35-year old WR than a first round draft pick and a solid CB?  Playing Smith keeps young, developing players off the field.   His salary hurts your ability to address other needs.  People are not really thinking about the cap or the future.  Some say that Smitty's drop in production was the first stage of hittiing the wall.  At 35, productivity does not increase.  He is already the highest paid 35-year old WR in NFL history (if he is not cut).  He cost us $10k per yard gained last year.  Smart to keep him?

Regardless of whether we can do better or not, we have to try.  I prayed he would take the pay cut and move inside--that still could happen, but he will be cut first.

saves 10 mill in 2015. saves 12 mill in 2016.

if we designate him a june 1st cut, it saves 3 mill this season. then 4 mill. then 12 in '16.

no is doesn't . If we cut him it will count 6 mil against the cap this season. We only "save" 1 mil.

6 mill???  his hit is 7 mill... if you designate him a june 1st cut. the 7 mill will be paid half this year and half in 2015.

He is as good as gone. The NFL collective bargaining has reset the numbers in the NFL. And with 4 years behind the strike, the owners have purged the ranks of the old school players with better deals. Cheaper and younger.......

Naw man, I am listening to you. My take is that every dude's got a shot at it, but they have to go through the training, the mastering, the physical wear, and even more important things like NOT getting injured. There are odds that a guy will ascend and play the 1 like Smitty and odds that they wont.

Its just not as easy as to say when looking at limited production where he wasnt featured in any of the sets. Sure he might be great, but if youre saying that he's great right this second then I would have to disagree. If you're saying that he might be great in a year then I would have to say that depends on SOOO many things and many of them he doesnt even have 100% control of.

You guys act like he wasn't producing. Only player to score a TD in the playoffs.

If we keep Smitty, we are not just spending $7m--we are spending another $7m and then $9m when he is 37 years old.  This really is simple:

Salary > production = bad business

Salary < production = good business

Unfortunately, Smitty was essentially in a contract year if he wanted the option to be exercised.   Gettlemen looks at the numbers and the production before he commits to 2 more years.

It really does not matter who else we can bring in.  You don't agree to bad deals out of desperation.  Want to blame someone, blame Hurney.  The next person to blame is Smitty, for not agreeing to accept less money by restructuring a contract that equals his productivity.

Trust me, Razey, I am not counting on McNutt, but wouldn't it be nice?  I am going to pull for him, King, our draft pick(s) in camp.

I don't care if Steve smith is old and not as effective. The way our front office handled this ordeal is an embarresment. He deserves the right to retire a panther after all he has done for this team. What a shame. This is what happens when you bring in a damn Yankee to run things
