Usually I'm in the camp of until the number is retired it's free game.   However, I think it's too soon.  Let it rest a year.

Cotchery wore 89 all seven years with the Jets. His first year with Steelers, he wore 82 (the number he wore at NC State), but then wore 89 for his next two years with the Steelers (the last two seasons)

I'm squarely in the camp that believes letting Smitty go was the right decision. But I don't think Cotchery should wear his number. Too soon.
