"He doesn't have the top-end speed like he used to, but he still has good speed," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday at the annual league meetings.

I hear Gman wanted to keep him, but Rivera insisted he go.

Just kidding

You'll say a lot of things when you try to justify a bad decision.

John Harbaugh - Smith's new coach - seems to think he can still be a deep threat. Given he's a fantastic route runner and will be in slot, facing up against second or third cornerbacks on a consistent basis with little to no double teaming, I would not be surprised in the least for him to be an effective deep threat. For that matter, Harbaugh thinks Steve's work ethic will be a great example for young players (Rivera also complained about his work 'causing injuries') and that he'll be a great veteran leader.

Except he's right. If you think Smitty is still a deep threat then I've got a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant to sell to you.

Until Ron pointed it out, completely missed that fact.  Completely.

Smitty clearly did not have that Smitty gear the last two seasons. He actually was slightly overweight imo..or just has put on that 35 year old weight. Makes you oldman strong.

Well Jacoby Jones and Torrey Smith are both deep threats so Smitty takes over the Anquan Boldin possesion reciever role. However with three burners it makes for some good scheming as you never know which WR is going to go route on the secondary. I predict a career year for Torrey Smith and Dennis Pitta.

Not really what he said.

What he said boils down to two points.

1) He's still fast, but not as fast as he was before.

2) His durability isn't what it used to be either.

Looking at last season, can anyone really argue those statements aren't valid?

Setup question... He simply answered it. What is Rivera supposed to say? He gave him props, too. Vanilla off season comments.
