He was a tackle coming out. If they think bell can play left maybe they believe he can play right.
If he could pan out to be a road grading RT, that will be a lot of Beef on that right side

Captain is garbage. He could be a solid Nickel but thats it. besides that pick that Geno "pick" Smith threw right into his hands, he was horrible all year in coverage. Still remember being at the miami game and watching the QB check down to captain very first right off the snap and eyed him the whole game. Up until the NE he was one of the top 2 most targeted corners in the whole NFL. Unless he is looking for small contact for nickel spot he's gone.
Tillman is stil much much better than captain even in his age. Tillman is familiar with Rivera's system. As you mentioned he is getting up in age, therefor he is going to be pretty hungry for a ring
The biggetst thing about Tillman though is his Veteran presence around the group. You need some respected vet in there with a young group of misfits like like year. Our DB's fell apart mentally after a couple of flags and Boldin getting in their head. A vet like Tillman can help gather them and calm them down.
Tillman is old and awful now. He's not an upgrade over Melvin White at this stage of his career. Take that money and bring back Captain Munnerlyn.

First off everyone wants OL OL OL to start off. Gettleman did say it starts in the trenches
That being said he has that NYG in him still (see building up the monstar DL) NYG Very Rarely draft a OL early (99 was last 1st round OL until after Gettleman left) Gettleman had a Very good eye for talent at getting lower round OL. We had tons of injuries at the OG's and the coaches did a real good job with what they had to work with. No doubt in my mind the coaches will dod a solid job coaching up a young Amini and Kug (one of Gettlemans pick)
Ginn- proved to be good pickup. Had some big drops but at the same time had some Big catches at the end of the season. Looks like Proehl is doing a good job with him along with him playing with Smith there to help him out. Also best Return man we have had since Smitty was back there returning kicks.
Mitchell- best Safety we have had in a while.
Nicks- Colored me shocked if this guy gets a big contract anywhere. His stock is close to rock bottom right now after this season. Inconsistency and Injuries have plagued him last 2 years. No better fit for him than here. Team in big need of WR, GM builded a team in mold of the giants. Playing with one of his favorite players growing up watching in Carolina Smith. Coached by Proehl who he knows good and well is growing up in panthers country. Playing at home (from charlotte and played college ball at UNC) in front of All his friends and family trying to get his career back on line to try to shoot for a Big contract in 2-3 years.
Tillman- Getting towards the end of is career so getting hungry for a ring. Already played under Rivera with a Dominant D who carried team to Superbowl with a average at best Offense. One thing that did not help us One bit is a Vet DB. No one to keep the guys in check, to help coach and mentor etc. (see how DB's fell apart once a few flags thrown against San Fran)
Jeff Schwartz- if falls in our price range, had solid year in KC. If Kug isn't ready, Schwartz can step in the starting role and help mentor Kug.
Wharton- if we can get another deal.
1st: Calvin Pryor- What many don't want to hear this draft. Defense Defense Defense. The better D the better for Rivera. Old school defensive minded coach needs the strong D. Our front 7 was arguably the best in the league, thing is the DBs were bad, real bad. Guarding the TE's our safeties could not do. As Seattle has shown in the mold of how to build a dominant DB core. Your Safeties have to be physical with the TE's and big WR's. TE's ate us up in the passing game this year. Next year we are going to need some bigger physical DBs. We play Graham Twice a year, most have ATL drafting one of the top TEs in the second next year to replace Gonzalez they also bring BIG target Julio Jones. We play AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, GB and Baltimore (everyone expecting them to grab a Big target), Chicago their pair of Big WRS. Tampa, several have them grabbing a Big target at some point in the draft. Pryor is very physical but also good in coverage. His presence out there will be a Differece maker in those underneath and TE patterns as Stars was in the middle this year compared to Fua. We also like to use some Safety blitzes. Pryor coming in would be like a LB blitzing.
2nd: Matthews, Benjamin- Some Big WR is going to Drop. Very Deep WR class and very little looking to draft WR before this pick. Cam needs weapons, point blank simple. No weapons our offense will stall even with the stacked OL. Kaep and Wilson dont need Very much time at all to find an open guy. Cam needs that as well. If not the passing game fails teams, stack the box to stop the run and pressure Cam= offense being same as this year.
3rd: Stanley Jean-Baptiste- Big Athletic Corner who is still learning the game after a solid senior season. He is a former WR who was moved to CB. Can play in our zone scheme. Should do well and having Tillman mentor him we should have our Shut Down Corner
4th: Seantrel Henderson- just never panned out. A super highly touted kid coming out of high school just never lived up. Still has the potential there. Our OL coaches did a Good job with a converted DT so no doubt in my mind they can mold him up well. Should be an improvement over Bell at RT. *Could very well go DE here if Hardy walks and we don't get anything off of him
5th: Marcell Jenson/Andre Williams- both I think will go higher but most have 5th round guys. Would be watering at the mouth if sitting there.
7th: OL/DL depth
RB: Stewie?, Williams, Barner
WR: Nicks, Matthews
WR: Smith, Ginn
RG: Wharton?, Kug
LG: Schwartz?, Amini
DE: Hardy?, (replacement via draft pick/FA off of Deal)
OLB: Klein, Blackburn
#1 D in the league, will make Big step forward which is scary after big year this year.
Cam has weapons to dump the ball off to. OL fixes the bumps.
Have the core built up pretty solid so when we get out of salary cap he11 we will bring in some pieces thats going to set us up real nice for sustained Superbowl Contenders.

We have some young guys.
Also note. NYG didn't have a Bad OL at all while he was there. They also Rarely drafted a OL high at NY while he was there.
Giants drafted 1 OL in rounds 1-3 from 05-12 (2nd round pick 60 in 09) and didn't draft a 1st round OL since 1999 until this year. Only drafted 2 guy in round 2 in that time period 2000-2012
It's been easy to forget this guy, as everyone said he was drafted too high and then he got hurt before doing much. But DG showed a pretty good eye for linemen on the defensive side of the ball, and this guy's biggest problems seem to be fixable.
Think the answer is already on the roster?

I've had us grabbing him in round 4 in my mock (every scouting thing iv read has him falling late due to depth in class) Everyone has him falling rounds 4-6. Big and Athletic but Raw.
Dream scenario would be to land him and Grab Tillman in FA. Tillman: who is a vet and played under Rivera could very well turn this kid into a top tier corner.
Want this kid Bad in one of those later rounds 3-4
I know everyone is begging OL and Gettleman sounded like it but Dream scenario for me
2nd: Matthews or best available WR
DE: CJ, Hardy? (or someone we get from trade for/comp for Hardy)
DT: Star, KK
LB: Klein, Luke, TD
CB: Tillman, Baptiste
Rivera is D style coach. As nasty as our D looked this year, That D would kick it up a Notch. Think the Bears D that lead them to the Super Bowl or the Top D we faced in 05 that Rivera was DC
Then Cam would have an added weapon along with a healthy line.

I'm not sure I think he would be perfect for Cam. You want a young receiver to grow with Cam, this kid is smart and those 2 will help each other.
The guy is Fluid
Smart-luckily we have Proehl to coach him, he is going to soak some info in like a sponge.
I seem to remember a Certain WR for the 49ers back in the day who didnt have super size, track speed, basketball hops etc. but was very fluid and fundamentally sound. He did quite well with 2 Gun Slinger QB's
Yeh that would be Matthews cousin Mr Rice....Mr Jerry Rice
Matthews isnt going to have to be The guy either. He is going to be #2 with a potential future HOF.
The more I watch clips of him and read up on him the more and more I want him. There are so many kids that come out every year Kill the combine Kill it in school etc etc who just dont pan out. Matthews just has the IT factor, just like his cousin he has very measurements but kid just has something about him. I'd rather have a guy like that for a Young gun slinging QB who is still working on to improve his passing game. Super smart kid who knows the game can help sit down talk work with and grow with the QB. Super athletes boom bust (see Ted Ginn dominant in college killed the combine cant miss WR prospect).
I would love to Draft Matthews, but that situation scares me. I don't know if he and Cam can exist in the same offense together. Matthews is going to be a high reception/route runner type receiver. But, to utilize him the best, he needs an accurate QB with really good timing, something that a gunslinger QB isn't going to bring, honestly.
Now, if you pair Matthews with someone like Alex Smith, who can time the poo out of routes, then he would be incredibly dangerous on the field.
Posted by ncfan on 14 January 2014 - 09:50 PM
To be honest I want Matthews more than any WR.
The guy has good athletic ability but not the combine warrior that make the GM's go WOW like Watkins.
As good of an Athlete as Smith is what makes him so good is his will and fundamentals
He catches balls he block he is fluid on his routes he knows when to come back to help the QB. Smitty while fast ran only a 4.38 at the fastest. There 2-3 guys that run atleast that every year who are also bigger and stronger. Matthews is similar, many many people here will disagree with me here but he is the best #2 possibility for smitty Ever more than moose (moose was getting up in age with smitty) The guy is smart and can see him soaking up what Proehl coach him.

Not sure how well that pick would go over either, considering both of our projected starting guards were drafted in round 2 and 4 the last 2 years both from small schools. People are freaking out already wanting to draft OG over them in this draft because "they are small school guys who wont hang in the NFL"
It'll def help Turner. The kid has great size. He was projected as a 6-7th rounder. He could possibly go in the 4th or 5th now. I cant see him going in the 2nd or 3rd. Would be too big of a reach.
Posted by ncfan on 13 January 2014 - 06:25 PM
If we can grab a WR and DB in FA to add to that I like it.
Posted by ncfan on 13 January 2014 - 05:13 PM
Love Love the trade and FA. Nicks is going to come cheap, Tillman getting old looking for a ring isnt going to break the bank, Hardy gone. Oher- should be enough to give him a decent offer.
Would love to see picks go though.
39- Calvin Pryor shooting up boards quick, he is here we jump on him
56- Best WR in left, One of Benjamin, Matthews, Moncrief will be here. Any one of the 3 will be a stud under Proehl and mentored by Smith
60-Like the Moses pick put think he is going to fall to our 61 pick. At 60- Kareem Martin, athletic guy but not quite big enough to play 3-4 end. Again this may will be a big steal for us. Not many teams will be gunning for a 4-3 DE in the first 2 rounds this year. Had the WR/CB/OL class had not been so deep to go with a decent amount looking at QB, we luck up and have one slide right into our hands. Martin started his career at unc off real well, then fell off but had a solid season. Similar to Hardy was Martin was thought to be a first round talent 2 years ago. In State kid to.
61- Colvin/Fuller or BPA Corner
3rd round-Love the Williams pick
4th- Jean-Baptiste Big athletic corner who is still raw to the position. Would normally be a 2nd round type guy but with all the corners coming out will slide right down to us. Instead of throwing him right into the fire, Having a Vet in Tillman who has played under Rivera under this system will be very very Good for the 2 young Corners. Big problem we have now with the guys we got is really dont have a true Vet back their to mentor them. White, Captain, and Norman will fight for that Nickel spot.
5th-Depth for OL/DL
7th-OL/DL depth depth depth
RB: Williams, Stewie, Barner
WR: Smith, 2nd round pick
WR: Nicks, Ginn
CB: 2nd round pick, Captain
CB: Tillman, Jean-Baptiste
#1 Defense top to bottom, one of the better D the league has seen in a while
Don't overhaul the OL but add enough to get the job done
Added Weapons to help Cam, Help the RB's running lanes, and Help the OL with pressure
Now 2015 With a 1st and 2 Seconds. I would not hesitate one bit to trade our 3rd away to move up in the draft. Secondary looks building and shored, WRs have the help, DL still built well. with that traded up 1st pick.....yes I hate to say it, even though we just drafted Williams...........Todd Gurley. With his Combo of size and speed he looks to be a potential top tier RB. With less holes and 2 seconds trading away a 3rd to move up to grab him would just be unfair. The 2nds you Double up on OL or if Davis looks to be slowing down a LB. Young Deep across the board D, 2 STUD RBs for Shula, WRs that catch a ball for Cam. After that your in a situation like NE where you just start adding depth. The 2 RBs make it easier for Williams/Stewie to go bye bye. When they are gone that Big chunk of change is used to resign the guys were building around the team plus extra change for gettleman to play with
Posted by ncfan on 13 January 2014 - 12:42 PM
No way. Gross is still playing at a Pro-Bowl level and the way the team is playing fully expect him back next year. You name Chandler and Wharton, you do know the reason why we picked Wharton and Converted Chandler. Our OG's got slammed by the injury bug, Chandler was around the 4th String OG option. As bad as the WRs were could you imagine the WRs getting bit like that leaving Cam to throw to Joe Adams and Armanti all season haha
We have 2 Young guys (one our 2nd rounder 2 years ago) who were projected starter and staff was high on. Bell easy to Jump on but when teams weren't bringing the house he looked serviceable that OL with makeshift OGs was getting Praised in the first before that top 9ers D stacked up and brought the house considering our Receivers outside Smith proved ZERO threat. We can bring in the OL 1st but without the weapons that stud young guy is Still going to get bull-rushed and look bad when teams continue to stack the box. Gotta go WR and DB rounds 1 and 2 and FA
Posted by ncfan on 13 January 2014 - 12:19 PM
After yesterdays Debacle
FA: Ginn, Hardy (atleast Tag), Mitchell, Gross, Tillman, Nicks- Going to be cheap, With the Stud guy we should have drop to us in the 2nd. Nicks should be #2/3 When Smith lines in the Slot
2nd: Benjamin/Matthews/Moncrief- one will be there
3rd: Would love for Pryor to fall here but likely not, Morgan Moses- Big road Grader on the Right side
4th: Stanley Jean-Baptiste: Gives 2 Athletic young Corners for Vet (something we haven't had) Corner who's played under Rivera
5th: Kenny Ladler- Already got Cam some Weapons, now keep building that D up for old school Defensive coach.
7th: OL/DL- Depth
Bonus pick: We lose Hardy Fully expect to get something off him. That pick thinking Kareem Martin
RB: Williams?, Stewie?, Barner
WR: Smith, 2nd round pickup
DE: Hardy, or draft pick we get from him
CB: Tillman, Jean-Baptiste
CB: 1st round pick, Captain
Posted by ncfan on 13 January 2014 - 11:11 AM
The guy came in with some talent. But there are plenty of teams that have just as much if not more that fail. Smith is a stud WR, Newton is a Young up and coming QB Luke is Luke but Beason came out as a top 2-3 LB in the league Davis is still Davis.
just 2 years prior we had pretty much the same last year same etc. He comes in with his hands tied with some bad contracts, getting some DB's that were just good enough to hold up (we could have still had naka) He went out and got Ginn which has showed up big for us. Blackburn and Klein Both solid. No one expected this team to win more than 8 games like someone said up until halfway through this season. He brought in just the right pieces though to patch up enough to get the 12-4 season.
Heck even this past draft: Short in the 2nd round has looked like the best 2nd round pick since well.....its been awhile. We only have 1 remaining player from the 2010 draft and we had pretty much the top pick in every round!
2nd Round picks since 2003-Bruce Nelson, Keary Colbert, Eric Shelton, Richard Marshall, Dwayne Jarrett, Ryan Kalil (finally a good pick), Everette Brown (our first pick for 2010), Sherrod Martin, Jimmy Clausen, Armanti Edwards (our 2011 second rounder), Amini.
Outside of Kalil, Short's first year is already better than any of those guys best year here. For a GM who was "Building around the draft" to draft like he did we were just being set up for failure. No team with the #1 pick only has that #1 pick from that class after just 2 seasons.
I still need to see what he does moving forward. He took over a team with a lot if talent and made some great moves, but he has only one season under his belt.
Still too early. Hurney and Fox had us in the Super Bowl in three years.
I'm a DG fan, but let's not get carried away yet.
