Can Shula, pick up Lane Kiffin OC. This will not be popular by no means but the guy can coach an offense. The guy has that fiery personality which would be good for Cam imo.
JPP: We need to get back to the strength. JPP in the line to replace Hardy is what we need. Also a former guy Gettleman scouted. Give Ealy another year to groom before we part ways with CJ the next year, letting him slide into the starting spot
Brandon Tate: Decent return man and 3rd WR like Ginn was
Bruce Carter: Athletic LB. Perfect to play under Rivera and Shadow Luke/TD. Could replace TD down the road.
1st: Trade with Browns. I'd love Cooper but think we can get a better value trading the pick to Cleveland. The Browns filled some holes last year. but with the uncertainty of Gordon, Cooper sitting there would make their mouth water. So the 2 first rounders for Cooper would be a deal for a team like us who multiple needs
1st #1: La'El Collins- Kids has the tools to be good LT. If not could be a force at RT, Think a Healthy Otah if not possibly better (would make our RB's feel like christmas day with the thought of that beside Turner)
1st #2: DeVante Parker- Now he is no slouch either and would be perfectly with KB. Kids name was thrown around as a potential 2nd rounder in Last years super deep WR class. He came back but missed the first part of the year, since hes returned he has dominated. Reminds me a little of a poor mans Dez Bryant (talent wise)
2nd: Spencer Drago/ Flowers- If Drago comes out and falls to here jump all over it. If not Flowers would be good. Whoever it is will compete with Collins for LT. The loser will get RT
3rd: Laken Tomlinson- Athletic, Smart Kid with all the tools. Amini has looked decent when Healthy, but thats the key word when Healthy. He seems worse than Stewart when it comes to that. If he can stay healthy and look good. We just built some Depth at a spot you need depth, look at this year. Think Tomlinson could beat out Amini anyways.
4th: Terry Williams- Depth in the Trenches. Where you win ball games. Star when we drafted him, the biggest concern was him playing to many snaps and wearing down. He has not looked the same this year, think mainly to being on the field more. With teams having much more success against our D this year keeping them on the field along with our Offensive failures he has played many of snaps. Williams would be perfect for those times to give Star a breather.
We have a ton of holes, but people need to remember we had a really good year last year. Worry about fixing those holes from last year first (Hardy and Gross). Get that front 7 back to what it was. We can add the DB's but when team can run on us, its not going to any good on 3rd and 3-5 with our zone D where DB's are 5-7 yards off the WR. Worry about the trenches and getting after the QB. Ask Cam this year how taking hit after hit after hit effects you mentally. Then a nice overhaul to this OL is needed.
All those crying OL OL OL needs to watch Seattle.
Denver Is getting in the backfield, but Wilson using his legs like Cam buys time to get it to plenty of pass catchers. Outside of Smith we have none. Beast mode isn't getting big gaping holes, he is fighting and running hard for his yards combined with Denver having to play its safeties back due to the WRs.
The DB: Safeties big hard hitters who can cover. Completely nullifying the underneath routes, completely shutting down the TEs, Completly shutting down the screen passes etc etc.
Going by the Seattle mold like Gettleman mentioned.
I still stand by
1st: Safety- Calvin Pryor
Captain is garbage. He could be a solid Nickel but thats it. besides that pick that Geno "pick" Smith threw right into his hands, he was horrible all year in coverage. Still remember being at the miami game and watching the QB check down to captain very first right off the snap and eyed him the whole game. Up until the NE he was one of the top 2 most targeted corners in the whole NFL. Unless he is looking for small contact for nickel spot he's gone.
Tillman is stil much much better than captain even in his age. Tillman is familiar with Rivera's system. As you mentioned he is getting up in age, therefor he is going to be pretty hungry for a ring
The biggetst thing about Tillman though is his Veteran presence around the group. You need some respected vet in there with a young group of misfits like like year. Our DB's fell apart mentally after a couple of flags and Boldin getting in their head. A vet like Tillman can help gather them and calm them down.
Tillman is old and awful now. He's not an upgrade over Melvin White at this stage of his career. Take that money and bring back Captain Munnerlyn.
First off everyone wants OL OL OL to start off. Gettleman did say it starts in the trenches
That being said he has that NYG in him still (see building up the monstar DL) NYG Very Rarely draft a OL early (99 was last 1st round OL until after Gettleman left) Gettleman had a Very good eye for talent at getting lower round OL. We had tons of injuries at the OG's and the coaches did a real good job with what they had to work with. No doubt in my mind the coaches will dod a solid job coaching up a young Amini and Kug (one of Gettlemans pick)
Ginn- proved to be good pickup. Had some big drops but at the same time had some Big catches at the end of the season. Looks like Proehl is doing a good job with him along with him playing with Smith there to help him out. Also best Return man we have had since Smitty was back there returning kicks.
Mitchell- best Safety we have had in a while.
Nicks- Colored me shocked if this guy gets a big contract anywhere. His stock is close to rock bottom right now after this season. Inconsistency and Injuries have plagued him last 2 years. No better fit for him than here. Team in big need of WR, GM builded a team in mold of the giants. Playing with one of his favorite players growing up watching in Carolina Smith. Coached by Proehl who he knows good and well is growing up in panthers country. Playing at home (from charlotte and played college ball at UNC) in front of All his friends and family trying to get his career back on line to try to shoot for a Big contract in 2-3 years.
Tillman- Getting towards the end of is career so getting hungry for a ring. Already played under Rivera with a Dominant D who carried team to Superbowl with a average at best Offense. One thing that did not help us One bit is a Vet DB. No one to keep the guys in check, to help coach and mentor etc. (see how DB's fell apart once a few flags thrown against San Fran)
Jeff Schwartz- if falls in our price range, had solid year in KC. If Kug isn't ready, Schwartz can step in the starting role and help mentor Kug.
Wharton- if we can get another deal.
1st: Calvin Pryor- What many don't want to hear this draft. Defense Defense Defense. The better D the better for Rivera. Old school defensive minded coach needs the strong D. Our front 7 was arguably the best in the league, thing is the DBs were bad, real bad. Guarding the TE's our safeties could not do. As Seattle has shown in the mold of how to build a dominant DB core. Your Safeties have to be physical with the TE's and big WR's. TE's ate us up in the passing game this year. Next year we are going to need some bigger physical DBs. We play Graham Twice a year, most have ATL drafting one of the top TEs in the second next year to replace Gonzalez they also bring BIG target Julio Jones. We play AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, GB and Baltimore (everyone expecting them to grab a Big target), Chicago their pair of Big WRS. Tampa, several have them grabbing a Big target at some point in the draft. Pryor is very physical but also good in coverage. His presence out there will be a Differece maker in those underneath and TE patterns as Stars was in the middle this year compared to Fua. We also like to use some Safety blitzes. Pryor coming in would be like a LB blitzing.
2nd: Matthews, Benjamin- Some Big WR is going to Drop. Very Deep WR class and very little looking to draft WR before this pick. Cam needs weapons, point blank simple. No weapons our offense will stall even with the stacked OL. Kaep and Wilson dont need Very much time at all to find an open guy. Cam needs that as well. If not the passing game fails teams, stack the box to stop the run and pressure Cam= offense being same as this year.
3rd: Stanley Jean-Baptiste- Big Athletic Corner who is still learning the game after a solid senior season. He is a former WR who was moved to CB. Can play in our zone scheme. Should do well and having Tillman mentor him we should have our Shut Down Corner
4th: Seantrel Henderson- just never panned out. A super highly touted kid coming out of high school just never lived up. Still has the potential there. Our OL coaches did a Good job with a converted DT so no doubt in my mind they can mold him up well. Should be an improvement over Bell at RT. *Could very well go DE here if Hardy walks and we don't get anything off of him
5th: Marcell Jenson/Andre Williams- both I think will go higher but most have 5th round guys. Would be watering at the mouth if sitting there.
7th: OL/DL depth
RB: Stewie?, Williams, Barner
WR: Nicks, Matthews
WR: Smith, Ginn
RG: Wharton?, Kug
LG: Schwartz?, Amini
DE: Hardy?, (replacement via draft pick/FA off of Deal)
OLB: Klein, Blackburn
#1 D in the league, will make Big step forward which is scary after big year this year.
Cam has weapons to dump the ball off to. OL fixes the bumps.
Have the core built up pretty solid so when we get out of salary cap he11 we will bring in some pieces thats going to set us up real nice for sustained Superbowl Contenders.
It's been easy to forget this guy, as everyone said he was drafted too high and then he got hurt before doing much. But DG showed a pretty good eye for linemen on the defensive side of the ball, and this guy's biggest problems seem to be fixable.
I'm not sure I think he would be perfect for Cam. You want a young receiver to grow with Cam, this kid is smart and those 2 will help each other.
The guy is Fluid
Smart-luckily we have Proehl to coach him, he is going to soak some info in like a sponge.
I seem to remember a Certain WR for the 49ers back in the day who didnt have super size, track speed, basketball hops etc. but was very fluid and fundamentally sound. He did quite well with 2 Gun Slinger QB's
Yeh that would be Matthews cousin Mr Rice....Mr Jerry Rice
Matthews isnt going to have to be The guy either. He is going to be #2 with a potential future HOF.
The more I watch clips of him and read up on him the more and more I want him. There are so many kids that come out every year Kill the combine Kill it in school etc etc who just dont pan out. Matthews just has the IT factor, just like his cousin he has very measurements but kid just has something about him. I'd rather have a guy like that for a Young gun slinging QB who is still working on to improve his passing game. Super smart kid who knows the game can help sit down talk work with and grow with the QB. Super athletes boom bust (see Ted Ginn dominant in college killed the combine cant miss WR prospect).
I would love to Draft Matthews, but that situation scares me. I don't know if he and Cam can exist in the same offense together. Matthews is going to be a high reception/route runner type receiver. But, to utilize him the best, he needs an accurate QB with really good timing, something that a gunslinger QB isn't going to bring, honestly.
Now, if you pair Matthews with someone like Alex Smith, who can time the poo out of routes, then he would be incredibly dangerous on the field.
The guy has good athletic ability but not the combine warrior that make the GM's go WOW like Watkins.
As good of an Athlete as Smith is what makes him so good is his will and fundamentals
He catches balls he block he is fluid on his routes he knows when to come back to help the QB. Smitty while fast ran only a 4.38 at the fastest. There 2-3 guys that run atleast that every year who are also bigger and stronger. Matthews is similar, many many people here will disagree with me here but he is the best #2 possibility for smitty Ever more than moose (moose was getting up in age with smitty) The guy is smart and can see him soaking up what Proehl coach him.
Not sure how well that pick would go over either, considering both of our projected starting guards were drafted in round 2 and 4 the last 2 years both from small schools. People are freaking out already wanting to draft OG over them in this draft because "they are small school guys who wont hang in the NFL"
It'll def help Turner. The kid has great size. He was projected as a 6-7th rounder. He could possibly go in the 4th or 5th now. I cant see him going in the 2nd or 3rd. Would be too big of a reach.
