RG3: 1st rookie QB to win Week 1 player of week

12 September 2012 - 02:51 PM

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Robert Griffin III is the first rookie quarterback to win an offensive player of the week award after his debut game.

The NFL announced Wednesday that Griffin is the NFC offensive player of the week for his performance in the Washington Redskins' 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints*.

The No. 2 overall draft pick completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's victory - making him the first player in league history to amass 300-plus yards passing, two or more passing touchdowns and no interceptions in an NFL debut.

Griffin is also the first rookie quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards and win a season opener.

The league started giving the player of the week awards in 1984.

Not Rookie of the week, but Player of the week :) :)

Shockey toughness?

10 September 2012 - 08:20 AM

I've always liked Shockey and i think the offense is missing his attitude and toughness. No he's not the player he once was but sometimes having a guy like Shockey in the lockerroom brings a winning mindset. The offense looked much more aggressive last season. I understand Shockey may not even wonna play at this point in his life but his presence is missed.

Anyone watching Denver Pitt?

Manning and co just took the lead. 9 minutes left in the game.

The Washington Redskins vs The New Orlean Saints*

09 September 2012 - 11:51 AM

Not the easiest game for a rookie quarterback to kick off his career. RG3 faces a huge test, not so much in the Saints* defense but matching Drew Brees and their prolific offense. There is no doubt in my mind that Washington will have a top notch defense this season. That being said i fully expect the Saints* to hang 30 plus on them. Hey, its the Saints*, they score points. They've hung 30 on great defenses in the past namely San Francisco in the playoffs last season. My hope is that Washington can match them point for point and have a shot to win it late. My head says New Orleans wins it 38 - 28 but my heart says Washington 35 - 32.

Saints* will have a few banged up players on defense today. The only defensive player that worries me is Roman Harper, he's outstanding. I'm sure he's primed to welcome RG3 into the NFL. Washington will be without S brandon Meriweather. (knee)

RG3 will not be the only rookie starting in the Redskins backfield. RB Alfred Morris has earned the starting spot after a strong camp and preseason.
