In Topic: Hardy court thread : for all things that happen in court today

If the Panthers cut Hardy, do they save any cap room from the franchise tag or are they still on the hook?

In Topic: The Incomparable Pete Prisco's Grades

10 May 2014 - 03:15 PM

I don't see how anyone can grade the 2014 draft now.  It will take 2-3 years before we know if the 2014 draft was a success.  In 2001, Seifart used a 3-round pick on an 'under-sized punt returner', and everyone questioned this.  Nobody, and I mean nobody ever could have predicted that Steve Smith would become the best WR and all-time Panther WR in the its history.  Sometimes you just have to wait and see how these draft picks will work out.  And in reverse, thought Jeff Otah would be the starting RT for many years, and we all know how that turned out.  These so-called talking head experts don't know everything.  Patience.

I thought it was interesting that Gantt stated that the Panthers have reasonable concern about giving Hardy 'former 6th rounder' a gigantic long term deal'.  If that is the case, why did they franchise him?

If I'm not mistaken, Beason tried to return from an Achilles injury and it took much longer than expected.

Remember - The Seattle Seahawks won the SuperBowl with less than great WR's.  Golden Tate was their best WR in 2013 and he only had 64 catches for 848 yards with 5 TD's.  These stats are comparable to Greg Olsen's stats.

The Seahawks won with a strong running game (Lynch had over 1,200 yards), very good special teams, and an outstanding defense.

Even with losing Captain, Mitchell, Mikell, and Florence, the Panthers will still have one of the best defenses in the NFL. Gano proved to be a very reliable kicker, and Nortman progress nicely as a punter. They still have very capable RB's with Williams, Stewart, and Tolbert.  If they can fix the o-line there is no reason why the Panthers can't have a very strong running game and this will complements their defense.

To me, the biggest weakness is the o-line.  They need to solidify all positions except Center & possibly LG unless Amini comes back strong.

They will add WR's through the draft and free agency.  They don't need a superstar WR to win....just look at the 2013 Seahawks.
