It's about pure athleticism.  Nothing about football.  It's all about confirming what you've seen on tape or spurring you to go back to watch tape to see if you've missed something.

If a guy performs well at the combine and the tape looks good, you've got a bonafide prospect.  If a guy looks good on tape but sucks at the combine, you need to go back and figure out if he's a guy who is going to translate to the NFL level.  If a guy doesn't look special on tape, but performs like a track star at the combine, you need to go back and look at the tape to see if there's a way you can utilize that guy's athleticism in your system.

THAT is the point of the combine.  Too many people get obsessed with the numbers one way or the other.  Some act like it doesn't matter at all, some act like it's the end all be all. Neither are accurate.  It's just a piece of the evaluation.  BUT, when we're talking about pure athleticism, it's about as close to the end all be all that we're gonna get.

THAT is why I say that Josh Norman is a below average athlete for an NFL CB. It has nothing to do with his skills or lack of skills on the field.  It's all to do with what he showed at the combine in the same condition as other prospects at his position.  Athletically, he's nothing special.

I m the biggest combine nut here, but I think we put a little to much faith in combine numbers. I saw dat thomas over his career and he looked like the fastest guy on the field in any game he was in. Come to the combine and he looked like he didn't have game breaking NFL speed so i soured on him. Well Come time to suit up and he looks like the fastest guy on the field again... I can't explain it other than game speed trumps clocked times.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Josh Norman is one of the most physically gifted players on the Carolina Panthers roster.

He's got the size (6-foot, 195), speed, quickness and vision to be one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL.

Norman also is one of the most unpredictable players on the Carolina roster, which keeps him from being not just an elite cornerback, but a starter.

Just when you think he's getting it, he reverts back to old, bad habits in terms of technique. Or he loses his cool, as he did on Sunday night when he got into a jawing match with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.

#2900051 Chances Bersin could be our number 2 at WR

Posted by micnificent28 on 20 August 2014 - 02:27 PM

I actually think he has a shot at being the number 3 wr. I haven't seen much from avant to not justify they guy has a chance at it. Also guy who were on the roster seem to always have an advantage over guys who come from other places.

#2895379 Already convinced...If Barner makes this team ove Fozzy....

My first live panthers game was fresh out of high school along with some of my high school football breathern.on the way to the stadium we say a woman with a Panthers sticker on th back of her car needing road side assistance. So u being the manly me we were parked on the Side of the road and pushed her car off independence Blvd. Which may have Been the highlight of the day.

When we finally arrived at the massively impressive panthers stadium we were bright eyed and optimistic with visions that one dat we might graze the field as some of these titans in a panthers uniform. As for the game itself it was overrun with loud-mouth trash talking "failed-cons" fans. the game itself was a thrashing to the new look falcons and infinitely talented vick who made peppers and many a panther defenders look like they were moving in slow motion. We didn't win but the experience will last a life time and o e of the reasons im still a life long panthers fan.

all this talk of 3 TEs... it may come down to 3 TEs or 6 WRs. if that is the case, which would you guys rather go with? are you more confident in our receivers or in our TEs?

let me ask it more specifically... are you more confident in Brandon Williams or Philly Brown/Tony Clemmons/Tiquan Underwoood/Kealoha Pilares?

My thoughts are that we keep Bersin and King as numbers 4 and 5 on the WR chart behind Benji and the vets. and we keep our 3 stud TEs. but thats just what i would do... i am still waiting for Shula to give me a reason to trust him.

Williams and send Philly to the practice squad. The rest can be cut. Underwood pilaries and so on.

#2883325 Is joe webb making a case to keep three QBs on the roster

I dont think anyone could argue against Davis. He's about as good as it gets as far as coverage lbs go.

#2858417 Did we miss out on a diamond in the rough?

Posted by micnificent28 on 19 July 2014 - 08:16 PM

We will always miss out on the diamond in the ruff guys because of our franchise mentality to take risk on troubled players. Everyone knew Henderson was a troubled young man but was the number one player in the country coming out of high school. This good ole boy mentality isn't what wins championships. People make mistakes they grow up. Til we learn that we will continue to miss on late round gems.

#2826950 Michael Vick on running quarterbacks: I started it all

Posted by micnificent28 on 22 June 2014 - 08:09 AM

Only fans of his generation who aren't educated about the history of the league would think he has a point. What Randall Cunningham was doing even in my generation was just as unfathomable and HE wasn't even the first to utilize that style. I'm sure every generation had a player like Vick in terms of being mostly athleticism and improvisation.

Comparing randle Cunningham's talent to Vick's talent is suggesting all dual threat qbs are the same because they all run. The NFL has never seen an athlete like vick and may never see it again.

#2826755 Michael Vick on running quarterbacks: I started it all

I will say this. Vick is the most polarizing and gifted quarterback to enter the league. Now I don't mean to aay hes the best or wven worthy of being mentioned in the breath of manning and elway and so on. But, as far as tools to work with go vick surpasses all before him and after at this point. The speed is that of the fastest ever. Not to mention the guy still could have a top 10 arm. The way he use ro effortlessly flick his wrists and the ball would jump off his arm. The way he made peppers and the crew look bad at times I cant say enuff how amazed I was at the guy.

Dog fighting aside the talent vick pocessed when drafted in 2001, name one other qb ever who had as much upside(cam is next in terms of physical gifts).
