Bob Hope Christmas with the Troops

16 March 2012 - 11:43 PM

I knew he was a great supporter of the troops overseas, but I guess I never really saw the footage. This really pulled at the heart-strings... it's a great video about a great man doing a great deed.

Blues @ Canes

16 March 2012 - 12:46 AM

last ten:
St. Louis Blues (8-1-1)
Carolina Hurricanes (3-3-4)

In the newly renamed PNC Arena, the number one team in the league came to Raleigh to face the twenty fifth and the outcome was not what one would suspect for this inaugural game. Cam Ward faced 40 shots and stopped them all in rout to a 2-0 Canes victory in front of a loud and full Caniac crowd. It was a tough defensive battle that saw a plethora of excitement from both teams but eventually took two and a half periods for someone to break the ice (so to speak). Chad Larose scored on a wrap around that deflected off of a Blues defenseman and into the net behind goalie Brian Elliot for his 15th goal of the season. It was an ugly scrappy goal, but it counts just as well as any other. Once he scored it only took five more minutes to tally one of his own to all-but seal the win at home. That goal, unlike Larose's, was a thing of beauty as Skinner collected the loose puck with his right skate, kicked it to his stick blade and roofed it over a sprawling Elliot. (Video below)

With the shutout, Cam ties the franchise record with Irbe for 20 shutouts. Cam won his 200th career game.

GOALS: Larose (15 - Nodl, Brent), Skinner (20 - Allen)
SAVES/GA: Wardo (40/0), Elliot (28/2)
PENALTIES: CAR 4, STL 6
ATTENDANCE: 18,680

Canes @ Lightning

10 March 2012 - 02:59 AM

The Canes are running out of time. Though they are not technically out of the playoff picture, they will be playing spoiler for sure. This is the first of a back-to-back in Florida, where they take on the Panthers on Sunday. But first thing's first... they gotta shut down Stamkos and St. Louis on their home ice.

Good news is that Tuomo Ruutu is expected to be back on the ice for one or both of these games. That would be a huge improvement over the revolving door wing spot on the first line with Staal (which has seen Boychuk, Bowman, Samson, Stewart and Larose since Ruutu went down). Giving Staal his familiar winger, and a much more consistent one at that, will help down the stretch of this playoff push.

OR, maybe Muller will reinstate the Skins and Fins line (Skinner, Ruutu and Jokinen) and keep Larose with Staal and Tlusty... considering Larose has been dynamite since his return from injury. That's an interesting idea... I might actually prefer. What do you guys think?

Carolina is tied for the 13th spot in the East, ten points out of 3rd (division lead) and eight points out of 8th in the conference (Washington). Tampa is 4 points ahead of Carolina and in 11th place.

Here are a couple interesting news articles: Erik Cole fined $2,500 for slew footing Oilers' Jeff Petry.

Mike Green suspended 3 games for head-hunting Brett Connolly (dirty hit).

Canes @ Ducks

09 February 2012 - 07:09 PM

OK, I'm still PO'ed about this result, considering the OT no-call... but here is the highlight video in case you missed the game.

Nice goals from Ruutu and Staal

Kings @ Canes

05 February 2012 - 12:52 AM

Justin Williams (a.k.a. Mr. Glass) and the LA Kings were gracious enough to come to NC for their royal butt-kickin. Actually, it was a pretty close one til Jeff Skinner put the game winner past Bernier after a strong attack that left the goalie down and out in the third period. Last time these two met Skinner tallied his first NHL goal. After a strong last minute effort from the Kings, who pulled Bernier with under 2 minutes left but were forced to put him back in after an icing call, the Canes held on to the 2-1 win at home in front of a loud and proud Saturday crowd.

Very limited SOG stat allowed by both teams...

GOALS (assists): CAR Jiri Tlusty, Jeff Skinner (Jokinen, Bowman); LAK PPG Anze Kopitar (J. Williams, J. Johnson)

SOG: CAR 22, LAK 25

PENALTIES: CAR 3, LAK 4

Fight: Tim Gleason vs Kyle Clifford
