#2747240 Cam Newton: “I have to take more ownership of this offense and I will."

Posted by TheRed on Yesterday, 02:05 PM

i agree with this statement. like i said, we need to draft at least one WR. but the ONLY way i see us taking only one WR is if that one WR is a legit #1 in the making. if we land a guy early who the FO isnt sure about, i see us drafting another later on.

in other words... if we land Brandin Cooks, Davante Adams, or someone similar... i wont expect us to draft another WR. if we draft someone like Moncrief or Landry early, i will expect us to take someone like Devin Street or Bruce Ellington later...

For right now, I'd settle for a quality contributor at the position, and there is plenty of talent in this years draft for us to find one.

what about john ramsdell - senior offensive assistant?

I mentioned him a few posts later.

this is why i havent been so down on the replacements for Smith, LaFell, and Ginn. a great QB and a great OL can make put mediocre receivers in the Pro Bowl. i do want Gettleman and Co. to draft at least 1 WR in this draft, but i would much rather have 3 OTs, a G, and only 1 WR than a bunch of WRs and only 1 or 2 OT and no G. the second scenario is what most pundits and uneducated fans seem to want... "CAM NEEDS RECEIVERS!!!! CAM NEEDS WEAPONS!!! wait... what is an offensive line? meh... doesnt matter. all our problems would be solved if Cam had some legit weapons"

perfect draft IMO: 2 OT, combo OT/G or combo G/C, 1 legit WR, 1 legit CB, 1 LB, 1 DE

The OL has been gradually becoming a problem for the past few seasons, it's not a secret. We also knew that Gross was very likely heading into his final season last year. Our drafting of contributors to the offensive side of the ball since 2011 has been very inadequate to put it nicely.

As for the WR's, the main goal should be to improve on the position first and foremost, not just settle for "replacing" those previous players. We do not have a clear #1 receiver, and I don't care what generic statements Gettleman or Rivera give before the draft, they want one.

Tis true.

If you look at the stable of receivers the Saints have been using over the past few years, they're really not that great. Jimmy Graham is great, but the wide receivers (Marques Colston included) don't rise above "good" to me. Heck, look back at their Super Bowl depth chart. Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem...none of those guys ever struck me as being special.

They've been able to sustain a great passing attack resting primarily on two things: An accurate quarterback and an offensive line that gives him time to find the open guy.

Get Newton a line that gives him time like that, and I think we can wait a year to go after a 'gamebreaker'.

The forgotten key factor. Mike Shula.

Also I can't begin to describe how nauseating this notion that running Steve Smith out of town is suddenly the answer to our woes, and how one playoff appearance (one and done) in five years will suddenly turn into multiple championships because he isn't here to "hinder" anyone anymore.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never been concerned that he wasn't in control of the offense.

What has been a concern? Him having to be the offense for this team to win.

Get the guy some playmakers.

Why do people insist on pretending like he was a GM in New York?

#2745686 The last five Panther drafts (Where are they now?)

Posted by TheRed on 21 April 2014 - 12:57 PM

Hurney drafted pretty terrible outside the first round with a few exceptions. No debating that. That said, he left Gettleman with some nice pieces in place. Cam, Kalil, Olsen (via trade, but still a crucial addition), Tolbert, Luke, CJ, Hardy, Davis.

I'm not even going to get myself pissed off about past picks anymore. It's done and over with.

As I've said before, for Gettleman to ultimately succeed here he will need to improve this team where Hurney could not, through the draft. Especially by finding quality contributors in the later rounds.

I wouldn't watch this crap if you paid me. The fact that one of the Robertson's is in it does not help.

Come into this thread and see people casually cracking jokes about a woman in a wheel chair, real classy guys.

So the guy who made a thread blasting Steve Smith for his behavior on twitter actually himself spends his free time trolling athletes on twitter and makes insulting remarks about another mans wife. Ironic.

Wonder if he's dumb enough to bite again.

Are you expecting a high five for this garbage or something?

Embarrassing.

If we didn't point out our own players sounding like fools we might as well be Saints fans.

I don't think he's the first person in the world to be upset about getting a ticket. He probably should have waited to cool down some before making public comments about it, but he's hardly any different from many other people out here in the world. The fans here calling him names over this are no better than the rival fan trolls who visit these boards.

It wouldn't be the huddle if there wasn't a thread filled with fans talking sh*t about one of our own players.

Williams is trying to get cut.  He thinks we would have to pay him guaranteed money and another team will give him $2-3 million.  He thinks if Smitty can be outspoken and get 2 checks, he can too.

Pretty wild speculation there.
